I want to start seeing a therapist because of COVID/work/life in general stress, but most therapists around my area are only available during “normal” business hours. What would be the best way to carve out this time, since I don’t really want to tell me leads exactly what I am doing, but also need to take care of my mental health.

It’s a medical appointment, that’s the truth and they’re not really supposed to ask anything more regardless

like

Put a block on your calendar and say non-negotiable personal time if they ask. It’s none of their business

Not at all upset!

I see one from 8:00-9:00 a.m. every week. I let my coach know at the beginning so that if anyone asked at least he would know why. No one else has ever asked, even with switching teams periodically. We mostly don’t come into the office until close to 9:00 anyway, and it’s extra easy with work from home. But even when in person, on busy weeks the night before I’d just casually remind: “I’m coming in a little late tomorrow. I’ll be here by 9:30.” And that was it.

like

I have friends who allow people to misunderstand it’s a weekly PT appointment. 🤷‍♀️

I have a weekly therapy appointment during business hours. I mark it as “out of office” rather than busy on my calendar, and tell my teams that they can ask me to move “busy” blocks on my calendar if necessary, but “OOO” blocks are non-negotiable. I used to say it was for physical therapy, or a pre-arranged commitment, and sometimes still do, but now for the most part I try to model good self care for my teams by saying that it’s a therapy appointment.

Also, block your calendar 10ish minutes before this appointment starts, so you aren’t stressed about getting out of your last meeting on time, and so you have time to gather your thoughts before your appointment

like

I generally schedule mine at lunch, and just make it clear I'm unavailable. If people press i say it's an appointment i can't move. If people schedule something at the same time just make sure to respond beforehand that you won't be able to make it, but will be happy to sync up with them after. Everytime I've done that the scheduler has either confirmed I'm not really needed or suddenly found a different time that does work for everyone.

If virtual therapy is an option for you the times are usually more flexible. Also if you look for a therapist in a city like NYC you can probably get a later time. For example my NYC-based therapy appts are at 8:15pm

Consider a new pandemic, at what % fatality rate do you think vaccines will mandated by law for all citizens? This is not the last pandemic society will face. COVID has a low death rate compared to Ebola for example. What % fatality rate would it take for governments around the world including the US to legally require mandatory vaccinations of all citizens? Would it be 10%? 20? 50%? fatality rate? Or will we never mandate vaccines in lieu of personal freedom?

I get it’s scary times and people are trying to be cautious. But if you are waving at me from a far because I am walking on the same sidewalk as you do, pausing and hiding away if you see me coming, or looking at me like I am a dirtbag, I hope you get the coronavirus for treating others unkindly. We are in this together and I am not trying to get it as much as you are. Rant over. And I didn’t really mean I want you to get it. I am frustrated what seems to be just rude gestures.

I secured a 2-year lease on my luxury studio during covid but am looking to transfer it to someone new around the 1-year mark (moving in with SO). Would it be reasonable to ask the new tenant to split the penalty with me (we each pay $2400) since they get to keep the low rent rate that I secured? The studio is back at market price now (~$1200 more than my current rent).
