I am carrying the weight of my position and job duties on my shoulders, plus the weight of family life at home, plus the self-induced weight of mentoring and teaching men and women within my organization, plus additional performance expectations because of my gender that my male counterparts aren’t carrying. Adding the additional weight of mentoring someone on the outside that I’ve never met is the straw that would break my (female) back.
OP, reach out to SheSays, they offer matching you with a volunteer mentor (I'm one). I hope something works out.
@president 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
My male equal at work takes way more coffees with people than I do, because frankly, he works less than I do. I have to work my ass off to stay on top and he can putter around having coffees and do a couple good presentations and get the same acclaim.
Some women are mean and unsupportive. Others are killing themselves to get to where they are and hardly have time to sleep let alone give free advice
Also, there is a production bowl you might wanna join and ask there too. Good luck!
@account thanks for the advice!
OP because most likely each of those men that replied has women at work and at home taking care of his needs and doing work he should be doing. So he has ample time to chat.
What President said! At my shop me and my producers also have to do the job of talent managers and business affairs on top of producing. We honest to goodness do the job of 3 people
All of this. Women work harder and do more in every way and have less time which is why you might be seeing a discrepancy in your responses.
Also, people in general in the business are super busy. I send out the same type of emails to network and my response rate is about 10% and that’s after over a decade in the industry. Persistence is important but you also have to reset your expectations about what you’re owed from people and not take it personally when people don’t answer.
I would make sure your emails acknowledge that people are very busy and you’re appreciative of any advice they can give. I find most people are happy to help but not if they feel the person is unappreciative or feel entitled to their time. There are a lot of people who ask for our time then waste it, (this is especially true for producers). Make sure people know you won’t be one of them.
manner and have been helpful. The majority of women, however, have either ignored me, dismissed me, blown me off, pretended to be helpful but then ignored me, etc. I’m not saying some haven’t been helpful or that some men haven’t done all the above. But what gives ladies? I’m not trying to take your job. I just want to make a break and thought you would be more helpful. Anyway, anyone willing to mentor or help me with finding a junior/associate position would be an angel!
SD1 nailed it!!
Hey everyone- I don’t get the alerts so didn’t mean to ignore anyone. I understand everyone is busy. I really do. And I really appreciate all you ladies doing everything you do and on top of that kicking ass at work. I just thought maybe women would be more open to responding and wanted to hear what your thoughts were. I’m very appreciative of those that did respond though and hope that everyone notices all your hard work at every moment
