Apologies for long post - Any suggestions to tackle this questions. My previous feedbacks 1. No Canadian experience - Chicken and Egg problem for me. 2. We got more suitable candidate. 3. I believe every hiring manager thinks i may leave for better comp/designation. My problem - Not able to convince them I am ready to stay as I may move up the leader faster given I know the stuff and process. Eventually my experience/age and comp will match my designation/expectations. Please suggest how should tackle this question.

I think it’s just emphasizing that you’ve done banking before, enjoyed it, know what it takes to be successful, and want to continue doing it (insert additional reasons about why banking is amazing). Mention something to the effect that you left banking as part of migrating to Canada and explored building other skill sets but your heart’s always been in banking. Which bank in Asia btw? If it’s a western name, you can also try to leverage that and your familiarity with its systems/processes/resources, as well as working with colleagues on the other side of the world, in order to nullify the argument that banking there is diff from banking in Canada. Is it a requirement for you to “move up the [ladder] faster?” If Canadian banks are anything like most big banks in NY, then that might be a tough ask depending on what level the opening is in. Think western banks are more focused on structure so if the opening is Ass1, then that may be 3-4 years before VP for you regardless of past experience. Everything’s a negotiation though so who knows? I’ve seen non-traditional paths that result in senior associates on the older side. All about telling that story. Also, I know Asian banks are less networking heavy. If Canadian IB is similar to NY, then you should be talking to so many people within the group you’re interviewing for to show your interest and get everyone’s buy-in (i.e., get that subjective question of fit answered) even before you get to your final interviews. You have to drill it in everyone’s head that you can do the job and you’re a great fit to the group. If everyone agrees, then there’s not much someone from HR, who knows the industry less than the people in it, can do. TL;DR: leverage the f out of your experience and get people to believe you can hit the ground running in Canadian IB, be aware that there may or may not be a fast track for you, and network network network (emphasis on network)

Shared this in a comment thread on another post and want to get thoughts — I’m at 9 interviews for an M role at a startup (close to unicorn). The final loops were early this week and the recruiter reached out today to schedule one final interview focused on skills not in the job description. Should I just pull the plug?

I’m a first year manager going into my second year. I like my job for the most part but am always wondering what else is out there. I was an auditor for 4 years, now do ASC 740 work. Being that I have almost 6 years in, is it the longer I stay the more I’ll be locked into tax? Recruiters keep sending senior roles that require 3-5 years of experience for a $10kish raise but I wonder if I’m selling myself short but also don’t want to get ‘stuck’. Any advice?
