Does anyone have experience with Ben Glass’s “Great Legal Marketing” programs? https://greatlegalmarketing.com
I ordered a free “starter kit” from his company and received a decent-sized box with some books and audio CD’s. Haven’t listened to the CD’s yet, but the books aren’t bad, with plenty of practical advice.
Now he’s running a promotion where you can get two months of his basic-level course for just $19.95 to cover the cost of shipping. It seems that Ben is one of the better-regarded legal marketing “gurus” out there.

Lots of places do this. Usually the rationale is, hard to put somebody in a position with hard sales targets when they’re brand new to the org and will take time to build up the network in order to sell & staff projects. If you crush it as SM, you’ll be fast tracked for director. Just make sure you’re placed in a later SM tier vs a brand new/just promoted SM tier which might take you longer to get to director.

I’m assuming you’re applying at your same firm? Or you’re applying at a different firm?

Ok so context on what firm you’re interviewing for would be helpful. Is this a B4? I’m assuming the firm is PwC or strategy& bc they’re the only B4 that has SM and D as separate roles. Generally, SM is the role before partnership (at KPMG, it’s Director which is the equivalent of SM).
I wouldn’t be too concerned with them leveling you down from your expectations. The comp sounds very competitive for that level and since you’re coming from an internal consulting role, it’s best you come into a position to give you more time to be exposed to the ins and outs of management consulting (externally).

I get it, take the role if it’s a good fit, good long term prospects and you get a nice bump

That's how my tech firm operates. There was quite a bit of history of people getting hired for senior level roles they didn't have the experience for, especially consultants, so 5 years ago we switched to having hard limits on YOE requirements for roles, with those requirements getting stricter and stricter as you move up the food chain.
It's one thing to fake it till you make it in consulting, but in the real world where you potentially have a direct impact on operational/P&L outcomes of your firm, getting in over your head is a real concern with real effects.
