Has anyone heard of company Rohde & Schwarz?
A bit off topic, but do posters ever get nervous when they post something quite specific such as this?

I actually will change one or two non-relevant details so that it doesn’t exactly match up with what happened to avoid this exact issue
Bring up a non work subject if you want to talk about something other than work.
Maybe they too then live vapid lives
I avoid firm events as much as possible. Some are unavoidable but they pay you for your work not your free time.

Welcome to biglaw.

are you class of 2021?
yeah the scary part about biglaw wasn’t hating the work, the scary part was seeing people let work consume them until they didn’t realize there were a lot of other worthwhile things in life and realizing it would happen to you if you stayed too long.
I once had a non-work discussion at one of these dinners. Everyone said their favorite movie and when it was my turn I said Cabin in the Woods. Another attorney at the table tried to convince the group the movie was really stupid and not worth watching. She hadn’t seen it, she was going off the name alone. I said I HAD seen it, I’m aware of the name, and it was worth watching. She doubled down that it was a stupid movie and could not possibly be good and no one should waste their time watching it. A full grown educated attorney was so convinced of her conclusion on the name alone she completely discounted my actual experience WATCHING THE MOVIE (many times), and was willing to go back and forth with me about it in front of colleagues defending her conclusion.
Anyway, I don’t mind it when it’s just work talk at these types of dinners.

holy moly what a bizarre human being
To answer questions, not class of 2021 and personally no, I don’t get nervous. There are 15K people on this bowl. Also, there may or may not have been others at this dinner as well.
I confirm. I too was at this dinner. I was the sommelier.
Avoid these dinners as much as you can. Truth is work will never escape you. Unfortunate :/

Yes, biglaw tends to remove so much balance and perspective from people’s lives over time. If you don’t take steps to counteract this, before you know it, work will essentially be all you think about.

I mostly talk about work with my colleagues. But that’s because as a WOC I don’t really have that much to talk about with them beyond work.
It really, really depends on the types of people at your firm. If they were boring people going in to law school, they'll be boring people as lawyers. If they have nothing to talk about outside of work, maybe it's because they never really *did* anything outside of work (or school), even before going to biglaw. Even my most superficial conversations with coworkers aren't about work - it's usually about food. Or our dogs. 😬
Ask them what they do for fun in their spare time. Can lead to interesting answers that then springboards on to other topics. I was on a trial for green coffee recently and that was a great conversation starter, as most lawyers drink coffee but don't know what green coffee is. I also like to talk about things I have read in the news (just not politics), e.g. McExit from Russia.
