I was at a networking event last night and a guy described himself as "worldly" because he's lived in.... Cincinnati , New York, and Seattle. I'm not from the US but I'm pretty sure all of these places are *checks notes* still in the same country? Also, I've lived in many countries and would not say this. He doubled down by saying living in New York is basically like seeing the world. Is this a common view held by Americans? Like if you've lived in different states you've "seen the world?" 😬🤦🏻♀️
I overheard someone on the phone in Las Vegas airport saying she loved her trip to LV because she saw all these things, like the Eiffel tower and the statue of liberty - "it was like traveling the world!"
And I won $10 to top it all off!
LOL. Just smile and pretend to agree with him. Is he trying to impress you or something?
No this is not a commonly held view... new yorkers do think they're the center of the world, but this person seems special
People who move to New York from the middle of the country think they are the center of the world though.
Welcome to the US. Where they have ‘World Series’ sports games but only play against themselves.
Canada has one team though :)
In his defense Ohio is foreign compared to NY and SEA, but still a pretentious wtf outlook lmao
Ohio doesn’t even exist if you refer to the memes
People on this app have a wildly inflated view of how much people move and travel. The more than half of Americans live within 20 miles of their parents. Almost 75% live within 200 miles of where they were born.
Only about 3% of Europeans live in an EU country where they were not born so I would bet the statistic is pretty similar over there.
Most people are born, live, and die in the same place. And don't travel that much. Living 2500 miles from home, even if they speak the same language and use the same currency is unusual

Let’s settle it this way, all self proclaimed “worldly” people probably are awful to be around. There we go! 😂
Lol I've lived in more states than that guy as well as another country and I wouldn't call myself worldly. He sounds annoying. 😂
Same with me and agree.
Chief
Pretty sure that makes you *checks notes, looks down nose* "country."
Welcome to the US!
Welcome to ‘Merica FIFY
Nah this isn't normal at all, I'm from New York and I'd have to assume the person is joking if they said this to me
Rising Star
Is this person from Seattle? 🤣
I have noticed that Seattle people have an over inflated view of their worldliness. Especially the ones who never lived anywhere else!! #themoreyouknow the less likely you are to have dunning kruger syndrome.
HAHAH this just cracked me up. This sounds about right though honestly. Can't say that I am one bit surprised.
New Yorkers. They're a different breed. Whatever floats their boat I guess. LOL.
Just when I though this story's not gonna get more interesting. This cracked me up. LOL!!
Welcome to America 🤪
Lol I would laugh in his face if it was me he was speaking with. But maybe people in his circle never left their home town?
I guess I see your point....And to be fair, when I moved to the states it was the first time I met so many adults who had never had a passport. It was very mind blowing to me. I had my first passport when I was a baby and my mom took me to her home country in Europe to meet family. But my parents are immigrants to Canada, and I am an immigrant to the US, so I guess it's just a different life experience 🤷🏻♀️
🤦♂️
Yeah...bogus IMO. I mean I suppose there are micro differences in the cultures of all those places, but I would probably chuckle if someone said that to my face. Thank you for sharing LOL
Blame frank Simatra: If you can make it there, you’ll make it anywhere; it’s up to you, New York, New York.
That's a whole different breed of New Yorkers. Just smile and nod and slowly slip away. Do not engage.
Check what OP said - this guy isn’t even from New York! As a New Yorker, I can attest that real NYers don’t claim to be worldly just cause we come from one of most culturally diverse cities in America… pfft
Once witnessed a lady being proud of "knowing different cultures" because she tried Japanese and Chinese food yummy!
