I find it more useful to ask for specific things you may need rather than mentioning ADHD itself. ADHD is different for everyone and even those without it may have specific work preferences that are similar.
Before I was diagnosed, I used to let me teams know “if you see me wearing noise-cancelling headphones, it’s not to be rude, it’s because I need to concentrate” or “if you see me fidgeting or getting up/moving about, it’s because it helps me stay engaged”
Still wild none of my teachers or parents ever thought to get me assessed for ADHD
I am very open that I am diagnosed with ADHD and that have a psychiatrist (for my ADHD) and a therapist (for my mental health).
It’s 2022! I’m not defined or ashamed by my neurodivergence.
I appreciate how much ADHD is begin talked about outside of the context of a “energized kid who can sit still” or people simply being “lazy!”
People should be understanding, but unfortunately you can't count on that. A lot of people carry stigma and bias.
That may be true, but the more we normalize talking about it the more we can break down the stigma/bias.
I was in the same boat and only opened up to a few mentors/colleagues after really getting to know them and heard them talk about their own vulnerability (and therapy experience). Agree with some comments above — flag this as a preferred work style: I mentioned that I need do not disturb time when doing deep work and may not be responsive on slack during certain hours; I am not very structured by nature so prefer clear outline and guidance; I need my afternoon coffee break otherwise my brain shuts down and etc. ADHD is a blanket term even for those who do want to help you — think through your ask from the team and share them.
It has become a norm at McK to do an engagement kickoff at the beginning of a new study, when everyone shares their work style preference or family responsibility (e.g. offline kid time from 6-8 pm). I hope you get to do something similar at your company and have a safe place to share such preferences without the need to open up to people who won’t empathize.
I think it depends a lot on the people you work with. I’ve kept it to my seat several places, but then I found myself working with a group who were mostly adhd and super open about it first. That was really nice.
That sounds like the dream team so long as there are a few neurotypical folks to keep everyone on task! Regardless, I appreciate the approach of being selective when sharing.
Best not to share it unless it comes up. There are probably others who have it too, but it could be an issue for some people. Also there is a broad range of the condition- some people can barely function, some take meds to give them a performance boost. There is bias in all directions.
So no advice because I struggle with this too. Can only tell you my anecdote.
I got diagnosed at 27 4 months ago. I had a new team member join at the same time and told me she had ADHD. I told her "I've just been diagnosed myself so maybe we can work together on this. That said, I really respect that you are open about your diagnosis but I am not. I don't want to share this with anyone unless I ask for specific accommodations so please can we keep this between us?" I know this vulnerability helped our working relationship, and a month ago she became my direct report. Now I do worry that I crossed a line by telling a direct report to keep a mental health secret of mine.
