I was hard pressed on getting an IWC Mark XVIII until I found out about this new release from Longines. It’s called their Spirit collection, and it is basically targeted after the IWC shopper. Meets or surpasses many of the IWC Mark’s specs for nearly half the retail price. 🤔 It’s really just missing the perceived prestige of IWC. Thoughts?

Really nice that they put a Yelp review on the dial

What’s the RRP? Beautiful watch

It’s $2150 and the IWC Mark is around $4200 Retail I believe. I prefer the IWC design honestly but this checks a lot of boxes for almost half the price

I saw it in the flesh and tried it on a few days ago. Very nice looking watch, and arguably as good if not better movement than the IWC Mark XVIII (being COSC certified ETA specially made for Longines). The blue dial is beautiful. Only thing to watch out for is the lug to lug is ~50mm which means it may wear big depending on wrist size. I think Longines doesn’t get enough credit sometimes, but they do make solid watches.

I have a conquest and a COSD which is one of my favorite watches.

Longines is perhaps the best value and movements are very close to Omega given they also fall under Swatch.

TBH, this doesn’t seem to me like it would appeal to the IWC Mark buyer at all. It’s a totally different watch.

What you’re buying with the IWC Mark is the heritage associated with being one of the original pilot’s watch manufacturers for the Luftwaffe. The design language of the modern Mark XVIII is very directly descended from the B-Uhr Type A. The Longines watch gives off much more of an American A-11 design vibe, with the railroad track chapter ring and the more baton-like (but still sword pointed) hands. Very different vibe IMO.

If you’re looking for that B-uhr Type A look but not wanting to spend what IWC asks for what is basically a nicely finished ETA 2892, there are other options. Stowa makes a 40mm A-type pilot watch, with or without date, and was one of the original 5 watchmakers that supplied the Luftwaffe in WWII so has similar heritage to the IWC, for under $1k.

I was a US Marine. My grandfather was drafted into the Imperial Japanese Army. So what? History is history and the bulk of the Luftwaffe were just German kids doing what they thought was their job, just like your grandfathers were. It’s not like the design was made for the Waffen SS or Nazi bigwigs. It’s an iconic watch design that has influenced horology ever since.

I think the Longines is pretty nice, but if you were set on an IWC, will the Longines really fill the hole? My take is to never settle for what you don’t really want, especially when the purchase is in four figures.

Longines really picked up their releases these last couple years. I was eyeing a jlc second sector and ended up going with a longines heritage sector. Have loved every minute of it

IWC made some iconic watches in the ‘50s and ‘60s. Caliber 89 was a classic movement, and frankly I would buy a good example today in a New York minute if I could find one. But alas, these days too many manufacturers are dressing up ETA movements and charging thousands of dollars for watches that have $200 movements as their heartbeats. At that, they are jewelry more than watchmaking achievements. To me, if you are wearing a wrist watch at all, go for something with individuality. Stowa is a great suggestion - I particularly like the minimalist dial without so much as a brand name to distract the eye. Nomos has something for everyone and is advancing watchmaking by producing its own movements. Swiss manufacture watches are in a different category. JLC Master series is perfection. Rolex, for all the guff it gets as pretentious, probably boasts the most accurate, most durable movement at any price point. Apple Watch tells better time than all of these, which is why I would look for a sense of uniqueness if spending thousands of dollars on a wristwatch.

Despite the fact that I leave my Rolexes mostly sitting in the watch box nowadays due to the attention they draw, and as much as I hate the way Rolex manages supply for its steel sports models, I’m forced to admit that what Rolex has been able to do with accuracy for a mechanical movement is nothing short of astonishing. +/-2 per day is getting into quartz territory.

Get the IWC! You’d regret getting a Longines
