I was just diagnosed with ADHD at 40. It explains so much about how I work, why I struggle in certain areas, and why I’m good at others. WFH exasperated symptoms and it’s what drove me to seek help. I wasn’t aware so many women mask symptoms almost their entire lives!

I am sure I have it. I don’t know why I’ve avoided being diagnosed. Maybe because I’ve developed coping mechanisms and feel relatively functional. Or maybe because part of me doesn’t believe there’s anything that can be done for me.

So I was put on meds (they’re supposed to help with focus as well as curbing binging). I’m going to a therapist to help change my habits as best I can and dig deep to release any traumas that may be contributing to unhealthy behaviors. I’m also on anxiety meds which helped with that. Just gonna work in therapy and see the psych once a month to see if meds help.

Can I ask for more info about how you work, where you struggle, etc?

So biggest struggle is staying on task—I learned I do something called “body doubling” which basically means feeding off other people’s energy around me to motivate me to actually work. It’s probably the reason why I’m such a social butterfly at the office and now struggling after 10 months WFH alone. Also, I tend to talk a lot, about many different topics. One thought jumps to another and then another. Which is great for creativity but shitty for my partners and team who are trying to connect the crazy dots I have already connected in my head. And I’ve been masking (hiding behaviors so that ppl don’t think I’m strange) for so long that I’ve begun to realize I’m exhausted from always pretending to be normal.

My partner has ADHD and I’m really struggling. His manifests more in not listening to anything I say but people hyper focused at work to the point he can’t multitask. For example, if he’s on a big project he will literally make me: cook, clean, take care of our cat, and literally manage our entire household solo. He also seems to lack empathy in hard or upsetting situations and we’ve yet to unpack a stressful scenario in a productive way because he just drops what we are talking about without a clear resolution. I’m trying desperately to be supportive and have been for years but I’m kind of dying on the inside. Someone give me advice. He’s also not being treated for it but is on anti depressants. I think the ADHD has gotten exponentially worse with WFH but I can’t live like this anymore shouldering so much emotional labor.

Creative Producer - thank you for sharing all this and taking the time to respond so thoughtfully about your experience! It’s super helpful and I’m going to read it all today. AD - you’re so kind, will definitely reach out to see what tips you have! This thread has actually given me faith in this app lol.

I was also diagnosed with ADHD in my mid forties. Stress and lack of structure totally exacerbate. Based on extensive past history I’ve had it most likely my entire life. The first time I took meds- it literally felt like a fog lifted from my brain and washed over me. I literally could not do my job during this pandemic without meds. Good luck.

In my late 20's, but I've lived in my current city (nonUS) my whole life. I was really looking forward to moving to NYC and landed a job there earlier this year although I'm still WFH and not in the US yet. A recruiter reached out to me for a new role but it would be in my old city. I'd be pretty fine with both roles themselves. But the NYC one would pay about 140$ TC (not sure about bonus yet, this is a guess), and the non-NYC one would be maybe $25-30 more. Is the $ worth the city sacrifice?

Would love everyone's perspective on this! So my company has a voluntary in-office policy until may meaning that people are able to wfh 100% of the time if they choose to. My boss has told me it's unacceptable that I haven't been coming into the office and is making my feel guilty about it so now I feel pressured to go in even though I don't want to and policy says I don't have to. Am I being difficult for not wanting to go in?
