I was laid off a few weeks ago (🥲) and it made me realize I want to pivot into freelance for a bit and live abroad. I’ve done a bit of part time freelance, mostly social media content creation, but I’m so all over the place with what I should do to get started! How to pitch, who to reach out to, all those logistics. Any freelancers here with expert tips for beginners? 🙏😅

Agencies usually don’t hire junior creatives for freelance. They want creatives who can hit the ground running with little to no hand holding.

I made this account as a Junior but tbh I’m more of an intermediate now 😅 but fair point! I think it’s doable, just harder.

I do not think going to portfolio school is a good idea. You're already working in the workforce, and school is expensive. Going back to school makes sense if it lands you a pay raise in the end. Not a lateral move.

I would use LinkedIn to reach out to as many recruiters abroad that you can. Tout your expertise as both full time and freelance. The one benefit a mid level as a freelancer is that they don't cost as much. So some companies could be enticed. Fair warning though, countries abroad to not pay as well as the USA.

I love this advice thank you!

Juniors can get laid off???… 😵‍💫

Does anyone know of a good resource or have insights into which functions within pharma/biotech typically funnel into leadership positions? I’m still early in my career, and find that the business development aspect is interesting, but it seems commercial roles (sales & marketing) might be the better pathway. I know it’s a bit aspirational to be thinking about leadership roles right now, but I’m just curious as I think about career navigation and where I may want to focus in the future

Has anyone here been able to recover from career setbacks caused by Dot Com, 9-11, or Great Recession economy? Just turned 40 with 15 years of relevant industry experience, and my Big 4 employer brought me in at a level designed for 25 year-olds. Career progression is apparently based on time in role rather than performance, so I’ll have to spend 8 years climbing back to the level I was at pre-recession. Is there another way, or is my career stuck in neutral?

I have tax provision experience. Worked for public for 3.5 years. And finishing my year in industry. I loved public because it had a more consulting role - interaction with clients, multiple teams, and variety in my work. Now that I am in industry, it’s more technical and less interactions with people in general. It has made me realize, I don’t think I actually like taxes. Has anyone faced a similar dilemma and what other opportunities did you pursue after? Also don’t want to be a senior foever
