I've lived in the DMV since 2016 and in DC proper since 2018 and I absolutely love it. I come from a small town in the deep South and had lots of preconceived notions about living in the "big city" when I first got here. Crime, although very real, is not the problem that it's made out to be in the media. If you have the chance to come here and experience what DC has to offer I would jump on it!
I’m curious- what preconceived notions did you have, and how did they stack up against reality?
I’ve lived in DC 6 plus years - generally love the city and it’s safe enough if you use common sense such as avoiding certain areas at night. But yes, I’ll also be moving to Virginia as soon as my lease is up. While I’m vaccinated, vaccine mandates, enforced segregation, and shutting down businesses that don’t segregate are a dealbreaker for me. Sad to see it in our nation’s capital
This one had less vetting, more side affects, long term affects still unknown, and for less deadly disease than others especially more most demographics. Also the vaccine doesn’t prevent spread and these mandates are more sweeping
Wear your damn mask. Get your shot. This isn’t hard. You’re not a toddler.
Vaccine stops you from going to the hospital. Mask stops the spread. This isn’t hard. You are not being oppressed. You are not a victim.
Lol then don't move here? Hopefully you will still follow the mandates whether you agree or not. And if you live in any of the places that are suggested in VA or similar areas in MD, you will be fine crime wise.
DC is not dangerous
I live in DC, and y’all lying because it is. You just have to know where to go and have city smarts.
Few people actually live in DC, you can live in Arlington or Bethesda, rockville, Fairfax, Alexandria, Gaithersburg, Potomac, north west, north east, or south west. Crime is fine. The only issue is south east, and that’s not anyones fault who lives there, it’s because of 100 years of redlining means south east missed out on the economic property of everywhere else. Turn off Fox
LA1 - yeah, also every major city probably has a larger day time population 🤡
Lived in DC for 5+ years - all of it in downtown or near downtown NW. Barely ever felt unsafe; in the very few cases, I was in a rough part of the city late at night. Crime is up in every major city - but also in exurbs and elsewhere (Specifically, gun violence - thanks America). I wouldnt worry about that. BUT this city is very blue - probably the bluest of any major city - so you’ll probably feel unwelcome if you’re against public health policies like vaccine mandates. You’ll find more kinship further out, perhaps maybe as far as Haymarket, or whatever is further than Reston :)
West Virginia. Vote with your feet!
I lived in SE in DC proper and always felt safe. Knew the safe areas and in the winter, would run alone in the dark. Female in 20s.
Probably Capitol Hill and not east of the river

The whole DC across the river thing is dumb af, easy to get anywhere in DC takes me under 10 minutes, live in VA enjoy your paycheck, less State Income!!
NOVA has that vehicle tax. People assume DC is the highest taxed area but don't look at the whole picture. https://www.arlnow.com/2019/02/19/ask-eli-does-virginia-washington-dc-or-maryland-have-the-most-favorable-taxes/
Check out Ballston area in northern VA- downtown DC is easily accessible from there via Metro. Lots of people do that commute.
DC is actually fairly safe compared to other cities.
Rosslyn/Court house/Clarendon/Ballston
Reminder that DC and the DMV area as a whole is exceedingly liberal compared to the rest of the country (92% voted for Biden in 2020, only 5% voted for Trump). We like it that way, but if you don’t then move to like West Virginia and commute.
EY 1, the good news for you is a non-vote is statistically nearly equal to a vote for the winner. So you would have voted for Biden even if you didn't vote.
These comments confirm why I could never live in the VA suburbs/Arlington. 🥴
Echo the above. Just live anywhere in Arlington. Ballston/Virginia Square is a great area and very accessible to DC on the orange line. You might also check out Alexandria and anywhere in or around Old Town area. Congrats on the offer.
Where are you moving from? Another vote for Arlington
For you, I recommend living in West Virginia and commuting in.
Arlington is much, much better.
Virginia .. lower income taxes, no mandates or mask theatre … only place to be in the WMA
See you around in Arlington! I much prefer it to DC. Cheaper, cleaner, safer, more car friendly

Concur, former DCer here too!
I live in Adams Morgan and love it - lots of amazing restaurants and culture and I have no idea what crime problem you’re taking about lol
