I was offered a promotion but due to internal policies the max comp they could offer was way under market value. I countered and was denied. I took time to think about it, being disappointed I applied for other jobs. Monday came and I decided to accept the offer. A week before starting my new position I got a call for one of the jobs I applied for. I am now going through to the last round of interviews the same week I start my new position. Would it be bad practice to accept another offer now?

I would accept the new job, never sell yourself short. Inflation is a b*tch and money talks. I would also consider their total compensation package and look into their PTO policy etc

Thank you! Appreciate the advise

Have you already compromised? It's better to know the comp package of the other company from the interview. With all the layoffs going on right now and the recession surging, it's really difficult to take risks.

Taking the new offer is perfectly fine. Being transparent with your current company that another offer is expected might be extra leverage… it’s funny how quickly a no can change when they actually think you might walk.

During the interviewing process it was made clear to me that my salary expectations would be met at the new company. What my current employer offered me was almost a joke. I accepted the offer basically for the title and seriously considered turning them down. The department is drowning and the amount of responsibility should reflect in the package...which it does not

Weigh the pros and cons of both 1) better package and 2) the looming recession depending on what industry you’re going into!

like

Good point. The high probability of a recession is something to keep in mind

Same thing happened to me, I accepted a counter and got a big offer a week later. It happens and if you are really good at what you do and great to be around, the door will be open in the future.

I left on good terms with my last job.

It's not. But it might leave an impression that you want to leave soon. Better talk to your manager about this to avoid future problems.

Any job should be paid market value. That should be internal policy too! Go where you will be valued.

It is not bad practice if you are not doing it in bad faith. The Company or Manager may not see it that way, but you can be honest about how you came to your decision.

Most people will always push you towards accepting the job that will pay you the most. However, it would be best to consider your career before taking a new offer. My advice is to pick the opportunity in which you will have the most opportunity to grow professionally. Where will you receive the mentorship or projects you want to get exposed
to. Also, think about the industry and how stable it is and is there growth. Don't be afraid to ask questions about training and development. Remember your experiences and skills are what will increase your compensation, not your previous salary.

Thank you so much. This is great advice!

No. You have to do what is best for you.

I had HR discussion today where I asked for 60 percent hike. HR said they need to check with business if they can approve this hike. She said she will come back to me post discussions with business. My question is if they do not approve of the asked amount will the HR come back stating what is the best that they can offer? Or they would simply reject my profile. What would be the timeline for offer letter generation if approval is received?

Does anyone have a boss or leader that nitpicks at everything you do, and also doesn’t recognize your work? Do they tend to have favorites? I started at this company fairly recently, as well as some members of my team. None of us has even been in the company for 4 months yet and we all want to leave because of our leadership team. I’m hesitant to look elsewhere since it “shows that I don’t stay at the company long,” but my goodness we are going insane!
