I was promised a promotion which never materialized. Pissed me off big time and I found a new position. Just put in my 2 weeks notice, which led to an emotional discussion with my boss. They’re upset that I’m leaving and apologized many times. I know the new position is way better for me in terms of compensation and career growth, and my new team is already communicating well with me. Super happy with them! But now feel bit guilty for leaving. Also feel stupid for feeling this way. What to do?

You’re doing the right thing for yourself. If they had your best interest at heart they would’ve promoted you as promised. I know this is hard though. Sorry you’re going through this.

like

Thank you!

You aren't stupid for feeling this way - they were trying to guilt you on purpose to get you to stay. Don't. You would have stayed if they treated you well; they didn't, so now you are joining a new team that's already treating you better. You've done nothing wrong, and good for you for knowing your worth and pursuing a position with a company that will treat you better.

Don’t feel guilty. Leave. They had their chance to promote you and they blew it. Shame on them for not taking care of their own in this hot job market.

like

I waited more than 6 months. And guess what, they assumed another person would do my job and their job as well (for same salary). He/ she quit this week too! 😫

funnylike

And if the market tanks again next year and you don’t get promoted again for “budget reasons”, would you feel silly for staying then? Nothing is promised in this industry.

like

You’re right. They were being cheap and lost two people.

like

I'm in a similar situation and giving notice in three days. Honestly I understand the 'guilt' but this company did not feel guilty enough to underpay you, not appreciate you, not give you what's promised etc. They are apologetic now because they can no longer get away with it. Your guilt is coming from you being a good person and hating to leave a company hanging, but you're not doing that. You're looking out for yourself as they proved they never would look out for your best interests

Thank you! I try to be a nice person, but people assume I’m a doormat because of that. I’ve worked very hard to not be perceived like that

like

Didn’t care until they couldn’t use you anymore.

like

Yup! I just need someone else to tell me that.

You owe your employer nothing. Leave

like

No need to feel guilty. The current company did not value enough to promote you. You found a new company to grow with and that is what’s best for you right now. Continue to communicate and build with your new team and enjoy the rest of your weekend.

They will be just fine, they’re just continuing the abuse by guilt tripping you. They should have delivered on their promise. Goodbye b**ches

You are responsible for your career. Seems like they didn’t care enough to get you where you wanted to be. Time to dip.

like

Why would you feel guilty when they didn’t give you what you were owed. Do you think they were crying when they didn’t give you the promotion or felt guilty. No they didn’t. They only “feel bad” now that they are losing someone. Companies won’t hesitate to fire you in a second!

like

Thanks!

Don’t look back and do what’s best for your career and sanity. They knew you weren’t happy and should have listened to you. Enjoy your new company and hold your head high. You can always go back if you miss your former company :)

Huh interesting! I don’t want to come back, they have teething issues no one seems interested in resolving.

I applied for a position at a creative agency via LinkedIn. I'm not excited about agency work but job hunting hasn't been going well and I applied anyway. They reached out and would like to interview. But when I went to look over the job details again, I found their listing on ZipCruiter gives a pay range, which at their high end is $20k less than my minimum salary reqs. Should I still interview with them? If not, how can I politely reply and decline the interview?

Hey friends! So I left PwC (risk assurance, did a bit of consulting) about 4 years ago for industry, and have been working in supply chain ever since for a major retailer. Recently, a recruiter from Protiviti reached out to talk to me about open roles in supply chain consulting, and I’m trying to decide if this would be a good move or not. I know it wouldn’t be quite the same as the hours as big 4, but I don’t know enough to be sure if it’s the right fit. Any advice?
