I was recently promoted to an Associate Director (yay). I’m currently making $90k and I’m going to ask for $145k. Since being at my job, I’ve helped win clients, educated many members of the agency on digital best practices and am now working to help grow my practice. I know that I deserve the higher salary, but I would love tips for how to navigate the conversation. I’m not nervous about asking, but I’ve been screwed in the past when trying to negotiate. Any tips?

Congratulations on your promotion! That’s a huge jump in salary so i would do your research and come to the table showing that’s within the range for your job - check out Glassdoor, etc. Also, I’d consider offering a plan to bump your salary up over time as opposed to all at once. Good luck. Let us know how it goes.

I agree you CAN negotiate a promotion but I think the jump is too big in this case. I’d have my CEO and CFO laugh at me if I asked to bump an employee that much (unless there was a solid job offer from another place and they were an AMAZING worker). If you feel you are worth that much of a bump the way to get it is probably to change jobs

I 100% applaud your countering intentions and am not here to dispute your worth. But I will tell you that asking for a 55%+ raise will probably cause your manager and team lead to scoff. Definitely counter, definitely with the number that you feel comfortable with (and that you’ve done significant research on), but please heavily manage your expectations to know that they will likely tell you your research is wrong (it isn’t; they’re just doing that bc they don’t want to bring anyone up to market adjustments) and that most individuals use job searching as the opportunity to secure a 30%+ salary increase. You might see benefit from securing a competitive offer and using it as leverage, but it’s always best practice to be willing and happy to take the new role of your current co declines to counter.

No advice here! Just wanted to say Congratulations! 🥳

If you’re worth 145K in the market and have research to back it up, why not ask for it now? You can always negotiate to something less. Don’t start out with a proposal for it to happen in the future - that could also be something you negotiate down to. If you’re underpaid now, you shouldn’t base your new salary on an “appropriate” increase - it should just be based on your value in the role. That’s why a lot of places have outlawed asking about current salary in job interviews.

Thats a great point. Thank you.

Go for it! Don’t under value yourself! Congrats on the promo and hopefully they get you close to your goal!

If you're in am agency, 145 is out of the band for an AD. You can shoot for 125k which is top of AD band

Even before sending rejection letter to Cognizant they revised offer to 16Lpa with 45k variable pay and 1Lakh joining bonus. I am not getting why they revised offer. Till now I was pretty sure I was going to Join FIS now I am confused.
