I was surprised to see EY has a pension plan (in addition to 401k). How good/bad is the pension plan?

It’s neglible unless you go pretty deep (hit partner) nothing to write home about especially given EYs abysmally poor 401k match.

I was at EY for 7+ years. Started as a Senior, left as a Senior Manager in early 2021. Received $65k payout from the pension when I left to roll into my IRA

like

That’s not bad EY2

Its better than a swift kick in the rear. Lol. EY contributes approximately 3% of my salary to it. And you have to stay 3 years to see a dime of it.

like

Thats the 401k that takes 5 years. The pension is 3 years to fully vest

Anecdotally I understood that at retirement age employees get $180k a year, just from the pension. Is that not accurate?

like

You can go in the tool and input your data Such as retirement age and last date of Employment and it gives you an estimated payout. If you stay a long time it will certainly be a benefit you’ll enjoy in retirement. But if you don’t do the years it’s just a little pocket cash.

Is the benefit of a mega Backdoor Roth IRA in not having to pay capital gains on the growth from your after-tax 401k contributions? Idk why one would prefer contributing to an after-tax 401k vs. just putting the money in a brokerage account. Also seems much harder to do a mega Backdoor Roth IRA if your employer doesn’t offer after tax 401k contributions. Thoughts?

Hey fellas, I m a bit caught up on whether or not to buy a home or not. For context, here's quick overview of my financial position: 1) ~$160k liquid savings(besides ~$20k investment in equity etc, $60k+ in 401k) 2) current avg monthly expenditures ~$2.5k 3) current TC: ~$180k 4) 770+ credit score Given my above financial position, what would be a suitable price range I should be targeting for the home. TIA

I currently max out my 401k, is it worth reducing my 401k contributions to save aggressively for a 20% down payment. My lease ends in July so would consider buying around that time frame. Or is it better to keep maxing 401k and just put less down and pay the PMI?

Finance question here. My mom promised me $15k for my business but won’t have it end of year/beginning of next year and I need to get stuff rolling and pay for stuff. I have already invested my personal $15k. Do I dip in my personal savings for the additional $15k, 401k or short term loan until she gives it to me? It may sound stupid but I’m losing sleep over this decision lol.

I'm really confused on how the employer sponsored 401k impacts taxes. I'm filing my taxes and credit karma says I owe $2000. I only contributed $8500 to my 401k in 2020 and want to see what would happen if I increased my contribution in 2021. I'm playing around with different scenarios and if I increase my 401k contribution to $19,500, credit karma still shows that I owe $2,000. I thought it should go down as my taxable income is lowered. Am I missing something?

likehelpful

Is this reasonable or am I missing something? I started maxing my 401k from year 1 and I hope to have $5 million or more by the time I retire around 60. Wouldn’t it make sense to put all of my yearly $19,500 401k contribution to ROTH 401k instead of traditional 401k? My reasoning is that I would pay 35% tax now and my remaining 65% would grow tax-free in ROTH 401k…. versus traditional 401k where I deposit 100% but every distribution will be taxed 35% assuming I make a lot in retirement.
