I was taught to always send a thank you note after interviews. I’ve been noticing over the last few years that the majority of candidates no longer are sending thank you notes. Are thank you emails a thing of the past? Or, if candidates don’t send a thank you, should that be a strike against them?

No thank you note means you don’t know how to follow-up. It’s a giant red flag for account positions.

I still send thank you emails, it’s a last impression and gives you a chance to re-answer any question you might have not answered as well as you would have liked to.

If going through a recruiter though (unless the interviewer gives you their email), it can be a bit tricky since you’re funnel a few emails through the recruiter.

Also always thank you recruiter. They’re unsung heroes and if things don’t work out well with that position, they’ll keep you in mind for others.

I’ve noticed this too! I still send thank you notes and expect them from candidates. If someone doesn’t send one it’s disappointing but I don’t completely write them off. I’ve had two recent hires and one of them sent a thank you and the other didn’t and the one who sent a thank you tends to be much more proactive. Not sure if it’s a coincidence or not but it is interesting to see.

Always a thank you note 100%. It should be a deciding factor if you have two candidates to pick from. It has been a deciding factor for me a few times when choosing who to go with.
For recruiter who manages the follow ups, they should receive separate PDFed one page Word letters instead of email based messages from candidate

A thank you note is always recommended but I also think it’s important to give people the benefit of the doubt, especially now. People are exhausted, stressed, doing likely dozens of applications and interviews all while juggling 100 different things in the middle of a pandemic. I also wonder if it’s a generational difference? Where they see it as an unnecessary formality or outdated trend? I don’t know, but I wouldn’t have it be the deciding factor on whether or not I hire someone under me.

I always send a thank you email.
- After 2 years at an old job, we were interviewing for another person and I was talking to the manager of my dept about the candidates progress. He said I was the only one to write a thank you email when interviewing 2yrs ago so clearly made an impact.
- At another old job, I was consulted on the candidates we interviewed and Manager of my Dept said those who don’t email thank you automatically go to bottom of the pile Bc clearly we’re not their top pick.

I still think it’s outstanding to send a thank you note that’s actually hand written. When in person interviews are a thing, bring the thank you note with you and write it in the car before you leave after the interview. Drop it in the mail right then and they’ll likely get it the next day.

It will never hurt to send one but it can help. Especially if you are in the last round and it’s between you and one other person you never know when it will be the tie breaker.

Looking for tips. College was not for me while I was young.
