I was told by a mentor to do some interviews every year to make sure my interview muscles don’t go away and confirm my market value, even if I’m not looking to leave. Good advice?

No that’s a waste of time

Then they weren’t really just “confirming market value” were they? Yes you should interview if you want a new job.

Yeah, but don’t mess with any company you might actually want to join.

Deferring won’t work if you’re the one actively looking for roles and if you decline on the basis of compensation then you likely won’t get another opportunity with them

It’s a good advice. I do same. Keeps the pressure off knowing that I have options on my next career step.

Always be interviewing(yourself) and always be interviewing(to find other people)

To the other’s saying “don’t waste time” - you do not owe a prospective employer anything. Explore options you would actually be interested in, and politely decline if it becomes obvious that you wouldn’t take an offer. Most of the time this will take a little bit of back and forth to understand, e.g., talking comp range, job requirements. It’s also best to keep the interview muscle warm before you need it.

Disagree. If you have no interest in actually pursuing a job, ethically you shouldn't go through the interview process. There's no way you could get through without lying. If you want practice, find a friend or pay for a mock interview service.

I confirm market value by talking to LinkedIn recruiters over the phone and then later politely declining. As for going through entire interviews, I don’t see why not although it sounds time consuming. It’s up to you if you want to follow it.

I think you should once and a while sit for interviews. It’s a good way to assess your skills and to know what the market is looking for. From there, you could pick some projects or certifications that would boost your market value.

I know this might be an unpopular opinion but I mean do you also only look for the best deals only when you have to shop? Are they reallllllyy the best deals then if thats the case?

Are you interacting with people on a daily basis? I think good interviewing is mostly thinking quick on your feet and building rapport, which any normal work meeting should help you practice.

If your boss tells you this, then you have to worry

Any books/self help materials for someone who is constantly worrying (and waste a lot of unnecessary time)? E.g. No matter if i pass or fail an interview, there is always something to worry about. The worrying/anxiety multiplies when I proceeded further in the interview stages. Now that I signed the offer and is pending background checks, my anxiety is off the roof as it itches closer to my starting date.

Looking for advice. Have an upcoming tech case study as a final interview stage for VP technology consulting role. There is nothing to prepare in advance. Interviewer will brief me over Zoom and give me the case study instructions. I have the remainder of the first hour to prepare based on the scenario provided. In the second hour, I will present my response to the case study to a panel. Afterwards, there will be an additional time for interview questions and discussion with the panel.

Need to vent. I have been interviewing candidates for a role on my team and finally found a candidate I want to hire. It’s been 7 months of interviewing and I was very excited to have him on board. This candidate just so happens to be Asian. A week after I submitted my feedback - heard back from the hiring committee that the packet was rejected and asked me to re-interview an URM candidate who has the lowest average interview score on my list. Now I have to restart the whole process for D&I😞

How can I set the stage this year to negotiate a lower billable hours expectation instead of a raise? As a woman I'm hesitant to be open about my reason: I want more time at home with my kids. I lateraled to this firm a year ago for WLB and they are indeed flexible on WFH which helps. Salary is a bit below average for mid-size firms like mine in my area, and I didn't get a raise or bonus this year because I didn't hit the billable target (1900). Ideally I'd keep my salary but go to 1600 hours.
