I was told by a PPED in NY today that the reasons I'm not up for partner is needing to lose weight, not being female or a diversity candidate, and not having the right family image (married with kids)

Sounds like this leader doesn't want to take responsibility to tell you the real reason or is not willing/able to put in the work to coach you for success. Honestly, that response is the easy way out of having a legitimate career conversation...think about it. I sit in PPED promotion meetings. If you look across the firm, we have a wide profile of leaders, there is no cookie cutter archetype. Absurd.

What practice area?

Look at some sector leaders who were promoted - bad numbers but were female / diversity candidates.

Candidates may care about weight but how often do they really see your family?

At least they were honest.

Make up a better lie; this story's been told too many times.

To my knowledge the #1 factor to making partner is your sales figure. If that's big enough no one cares what you look like or if you have three kids and a dog.

like

Sounds like they're trying to fill a quota, instead of actually embracing diversity.

like

God OP - Start looking for another job. That is more crap than anyone should take!!! If you were financially secure, I would walk away on Monday.

like

@P1, pretty sure he's saying he's white and that's why he's not getting the promo

like

This is such bullshit. I'm sure the PPED didn't say that to you

like

I call bullshit. Even if they felt that way, I doubt it would be said like that. This would put the partner and our firm at risk. And nice way to blame in shape, diverse candidate... get those sales numbers up. Money talks, not ur weight as we have fat partners.

like

Go away, troll.

like

Isn't ALL of that against the law????

like

Wow. Welcome to EY.

like

Tell that dude to suck a bag of dicks to his face and find somewhere else to work. You deserve better.

like

You know that parts of that are true, right?!

like

Typical democrat way of equal opportunity lol

like

All of it except the weight part is illegal. I am doubtful he's telling the truth. EY's culture is one where people have difficulty giving honest feedback.

like

Again - who cares? Client doesn't see your wife, husband, partner, ex, future ex, etc

like

Cry harder.

like

Sad to say but leave the firm. They just told you that EY is not the place for you.

like

That totally sucks. How does the number on the scale have one bit of impact on your performance and value to firm. I am very angry on your behalf OP.
