Do you design? Cool. You’re a designer! Don’t let someone’s bias on education convince you otherwise ;)
Lol I have a BS in "Graphic Communication Design". It's all just semantics imo.
Sounds like they just earned their BS.
I don’t have any degrees. Still design and art direct and am a professional
I have an MS in Marketing
There is a conversation about certification that validates our work—architects, tattoo artists, doctors, etc all have to go through some form of validation and I think it shouldn’t be dismissed too quickly.
In a world where something like that is required, designers could be paid more, not asked for spec work as much, and be legitimized.
While I think the whole BA vs BFA is snobbery there is something to having a process to become a designer and be validated.
My degree had 5 mandatory semesters (1 yr 4 months total) of internships. I'm a big believer in the "10,000 hours" principle, and I always felt that that time out working in the field, with a mentor, was the most effective part of that 5 year degree.
If anything I'd say designers would benefit more from traditional apprenticeships than a formal academic education. Did I really need that one math credit?
wow. no one has ever asked me my degree
Do not ever let anyone for any reason tell you what you are and what you are not.
sounds like a recruiter
The irony was that none of these guys were actually designers themselves.
color me not at all, not in the slightest bit surprised
At my school there wasn’t any difference in the course load for BFA and BA for art. A BA at our school would have been a BFA elsewhere, the only difference was the politics and under BFA you needed a professor sponsor to look over a final project with you. A professor of mine recommended not doing the BFA route since it didn’t give anymore than he BA and just cost more money because they made you sign up for a 3 credit hour course that was technically you’re own work time, not a class. I double majored instead and don’t regret it.
The person who told you that obviously has issues. Don’t listen to fools, listen to yourself. If you’re designing, then you’re a designer. The End
The person that said that is clearly an imbecile with no filter or ability for critical thought. Dismiss and move on forever !!!
Doesn’t matter. Your design does.
Got my degree in English. Go figure
That’s why Jony just copied Dieter Rams designs.
He didn’t copy, he was inspired. Ram made different products, with different functions, with major design differences. I believe Ive made a calculator as a tribute to Ram which was similar, but no he didn’t do a Samsung.
I have a BA in design. It makes me less likely to try to tell a designer how to do their job. I know how smart designers are!
There are probably a few other differences between you and Jonny Ive.
🐯 Monday mornings at BBDO sound wonderful!
I have a BA and MA in Philosophy. Does that mean I can’t write?
