If you're going to be required to work more than 40 hours, you should be making more, since you'll be getting time and a half OT.
I would almost think this might work in your favor. Now you are hourly and get paid to work your hours, they only way it would work against you is if you were working less hours.
It's too early to doubt the management's prerogative. If they promised you that your pay will remain the same, then I guess you can relax for now. Just make an observation on how the new payment scheme goes. Nevertheless, it is better to ask HR if how it will affect you or your working hours.
This happened to me. They said our jobs were being reclassified. Whatever that means . We usually got a bonus every year but they reworked the pay structure and included it in our hourly rate. Not too long after they froze raises. Compared to market average I’m making significantly lower than my peers. However I now qualify for the top of the budget with other companies now so it’s time to jump ship
We had that happen to us after integration to Optum. Now, we get paid overtime 1.5 rate for everything over 40hrs.
It can be more expensive to have a salaried employee than an hourly employee, there may also be different rights they have. As an example, as a salaried employee at my company I receive more paid time off per year, and my time off is front loaded, I also get different reimbursement for certain things. It would depend on company policy.
Honestly it sounds like you may have been misclassified and an HR audit found your position should be hourly.
How much OT have you been working?
If reportable incidents are your responsibility and they can occur towards the end of your shift, then that position obviously should be covered 24/7 and enough staff hired to cover all those hours. They can't fairly rely on the last person standing to continually be held late at work to cover them. OT pay is fine occasionally but it is not more important than the health of the employee and it should not become a tool that HR uses to blind itself to the need for more staff to adequately cover that position. In 35 years of working I never took a coffee break or lunch break. While my direct boss was always grateful for the work getting done, HR certainly never cared that more staff was needed in that position. If you continue to cover those needs without complaining, HR will never offer to improve the situation. It may be time to request that a job analyst be brought in to re-evaluate your position. Why can't the "staff" person involved in the incident be responsible for the reporting and FAXing?
This happened to my colleagues who work in California.
Cali has strict labor laws and criteria to be considered salary. It actually benefited them, they didn’t work over 8 hours a day and kept their same pay. The rest of us in other states remained salary and worked well over 8 hours a day. I’m not sure where you live but perhaps your state labor laws are the same. Additionally a former colleague in Cali filed a lawsuit over wages not paid for lunch breaks, training and working off the clock claiming our job classification should be hourly.
She won and thus the change occurred
The previous responses are valid and fair guesses. Another thing to consider is how yours and your team’s performance and responsibilities will be assessed. They may become more “detailed” in how everyone is spending their time, if you will.
I am hearing that this company really micro-manages. And I spend a lot of time on administrative duties like mailing information to families, filing and copying documents for medical records.
I wouldn't be nervous. Usually when you are hourly you can get overtime so it may actually work out better for you.I would ask HR just to be sure though.
Fellow SW in a stressful job. I switched from salary to hourly this summer and it’s so much better bc I was always working OT anyway. I hope it works in your favor :)
Should work in your favor. If you’re working more than the 40 hrs you’ll be compensated for
It instead of working more for the same check biweekly
