Good morning all. I’m curious on your thoughts: would you apply to a company that has done layoffs (more than 1 round?). Example - Oracle Cerner has an interesting position I’m looking at, however I know with the merger layoffs occurred….so I’m leery. Curious for others thoughts/opinions!

What does it mean to be in good standing?

More than laziness or incompetence. Those will eventually get you asked to leave but you won’t get fired for them. Firms typically don’t fire people.

I started doing this as a 5th year and am now an 8th year and am still here. I don’t want to make partner at all and am tired of the work. I’d have left already if it wasn’t for Covid WFH and the bonuses. They just keep paying me. I got a sort of blah evaluation the first two years (average but not bad), but this year my evaluation was glowing. I didn’t even try and billed maybe 105% of target. It’s so weird. I am sort of realizing we have a diversity issue and they need me to stick around for a bit to help with that so the expectations are low.

On another note, I also want to say that I don’t think diversity is just a “pr” thing. We have clients that demand diversity now. Two major clients require 50% diversity on each of their matters and require regular diversity reporting. It’s not just an appearances thing. Our clients value diversity in their own businesses and want those values reflected in their counsel. If law firms need to make accommodations to keep diverse attorneys around, they’re going to have to do it to keep clients around. Failing to provide flexible or reasonable hours for women, especially mothers, just doesn’t work any more. Failing to give diverse attorneys the same opportunities their non-diverse peers get just doesn’t work any more. This is a business issue, not a PR one.

What changed? Burnout? I’ve noticed that it takes a while for people to assume laziness if you already have a strong rep. They’ll probably just assume you have something personal going on and cut you some slack if you have a strong rep. That’s my experience anyway.
I think combination of burn out + not wanting to go for partner + not being that interested in the practice. Maybe I should try to retool but not sure if that will ultimately help me
In this economy, not much. But when the market turns, the lazy associates will be the first to go. The "stealth layoffs" you used to read about on Above the Law? That's firms getting rid of underperforming associates when the market doesn't support keeping them around.
Usually you get a few months to look for a new job and can often ask to stay on the firm website after that too.
