I went through the loop at Amazon and ultimately didn't get hired. From what the recruiter mentioned, it wasn't a question of fit but of experience (only about 2.5 years out). How many years of experience have you all seen people go into FAANGs in lower associate counsel positions? Thank you for your help!

I’ve had colleagues with 2 years of experience make the jump. You probably dodged a bullet with Amazon, so don’t be too down!

I think this is really role- and need-specific. Sometimes there is a need for junior lawyers, sometimes there isn't. That said, I feel like 4 years of experience is the sweet spot where experience aligns most with need.

I interviewed for an associate counsel position as a 5th year and told I was too senior for it. That 3-4 is the sweet spot.

This gives me hope, hahaha

Where are you now

I’ve heard Amazon hires and then lays everyone off a year or two later

Kudos for getting through to the later stages. I got in at a FAANG at 3 YOE. During the interview process I asked the hiring manager directly whether my experience raised concerns. I think it surprised them but I was able to address their concerns.

Yes, I was billing 2200 hours on a 1900 billable requirement at an AM100 but getting paid less than scale due to being in a lcol market. I work about 40 hours now and no weekends. I’ll never make that equity partner money but I’m fine with that.

Additional Posts in In-House Counsel

I recently had an in-house interview for a large company where the screening interviewer communicated the salary range and told me that I had to let him know on the spot if the range was not high enough. The amount was lower than I initially expected based on my research into the role and company so I was a little surprised. What is the best response to this question bearing in mind that I would like to make it to the next round while negotiating a higher salary?

I heard that when Netflix hires outside counsel, it asks a series of questions to determine how credit is given at the firm selected. The goal is to ensure that the “old white hairs” at the top are not receiving/taking credit from the lawyers really doing and managing the lion’s share of the work. Some level of research shows that the real working lawyers tend to be predominantly women/POC who are essentially punished by old school origination systems. Thoughts?
