The Power of Personality Workshop

I will be needing to interview before long and I have been told repeatedly I don’t make a good first impression. But no one has gone further with that. How can I fix it?

Oh my! Who said that! Neutral might help? Context: I’ve often been more informed or experienced than my interviewers - not my fault but I learned to be more neutral. Excited & curious; not overpowering. Interested but without endless questions. Pleasant without talking too long. And always a prompt thank you note

Poll some folks generically— ask what makes a good first impression when you meet someone? Don’t make it about you. Also there’s good stuff about executive presence and first impressions.

I was told my face tends to naturally fall into what’s commonly called resting bitch face. So each time I go into an interview, I force the largest smile possible as soon as they see me. This one change got me every single job thereafter.

Impossible to provide feedback without more context, so you need to probe. I’d start by going back to ask those people specifically what they meant, and what “bad impression” they get from you. See if the feedback has a consistent thread... like you’re nervous, or your shirt is wrinkled, or you have a hard time explaining yourself. Can’t address or confront what you don’t understand!
