Prepare for PMO baby
What’s a “good” project mean to you?
You have no control. Your name will go out to a pool of Directors with sold work telling us to figure out how to use you now
Always worth your time unless you like doing data entry
Yes. Definitely network and try and find a project where you can actually learn things instead of being stuck doing PMO or other bullshit work
Worth it. What’s the harm?
Definitely worth it. I had a small, but solid network when I started as an Associate and it got me out of a long-term PMO and into a couple more desirable projects while I was still trying to build my brand.
Network...impact will likely be 0 since you'll staffed where there is a need
And even if you do get in with your preferred crew...project could be rotten.
Welcome to the shit
Networking is good, but don’t start asking how you can jump to a new group or line of service or what not right off the bat. Do the job you’re hired to first, prove yourself, and maintain those relationships.
@D1 is correct because it happens like that every year - it’s always hard to immediately staff a large number of new hires coming available all at once, even if HR fantasizes about exactly that happening and hauls us on repetitive calls to try to make that happen without lowering project margin. That said, networking won’t hurt, but I’m more likely to request you if you did well on my team during your internship or reviews of you were strong.
Harmless to try and network but zero guarantees it goes anywhere
I appreciate the candid advice. My plan is to start networking with a team that works with a target client. Shortly after, ping staffing and ask “if possible, send me to xyz team on abc client?” What do you think?
Won’t matter. No control
