I will start working at a new firm as a 3rd year lateral soon. Given that many people might still be working remotely, what are some tips for introducing myself and getting to know the people in my practice group without being too forward? I am an introvert and networking has always been overwhelming for me, but I hope I will get to know at least the associates around my class year.

I recently lateraled and I’ve gone into the office a couple times a week to meet whoever is around. I’ve joined my office’s diversity committee and the firm wide affinity group. People on my teams have been great about making recommendations on who I should meet. Sending emails to alums from your schools and scheduling a 15-30 minute zoom call.

The office is mostly a ghost town but I’ve met quite a few people doing those things.

If you can join a committee, it's a good way to meet people.

Obviously this is all omicron-dependent come January, but I’ve been pushing my candidates to get to the office. It’s usually the same people going in every day. Those people are forming a bond that will definitely stick.

I started at a new company a few weeks ago. The team has been so poorly managed and C suite hasn't been the best at managing them - I'm their first CD ever so I can see where they're coming from and what their concerns are.

One has just resigned, and another has told me and is thinking about looking. Red flag / sign for me to look too, or should I look past it and think about rebuilding things from the ground up. This is the first time I've come across this, so not sure how to approach things.

Any other junior in-house lawyers report to non-lawyers?? How do you deal with it? My boss has worked in law their entire career but is not a lawyer. It is a struggle because they are not as responsive and quick, lack knowledge of law (i.e., may misstate the law and misguide internal clients), among other things.

One of the customers complained that I was too slow (I'm dyslexic, I'm doing my best!) so my manager stepped in to help her. I thought I was going to be in really big trouble. But after the customer left the manager told me that I shouldn't be too hard on myself, "sometimes customers are just being jerks" and I felt so grateful. Not all supervisors are unreasonable, some of them are actually quite understanding. I don't know. It just surprised me, it was really cool.

I added a well recognized litigator in my area at a top firm on LinkedIn... reason being is that I’m a first year in litigation and hope to accomplish at least half the things he has in my career. So it’s interesting to see his takes on things when he engages on a post.

I’m tempted to send him a personal message, not for a job or anything, but honestly just to ask “how he did it” and what advice he might give.

Is there any harm in this? Don’t wanna be annoying.

Recent lateral junior associate in brand new practice where I'm the only associate. I'm probably going to bill 1,500 hours max this year due to being very slow and taking time off for a delayed honeymoon which I disclosed during my interview process. I have been told my work product is good, I don't turn anything down, I participate in non-billable work, I'm responsive and I always let people know I'm available to help. Litigation associates— 4th to 6th years— is it billable to review emails? Obviously We have to review emails to know what is going on but sometimes there isn’t an obvious purpose for why we had to review it and sometimes there is no need to respond either. Asking 4th to 6th years because I have a feeling how billable some things are depends on how senior you are and the more senior you are the less billable certain things are. Enlighten me!!
