Deloitte fishes - I’m new to Deloitte and enrolling in benefits and having a hard time determining if I go with one of the PPO or HDHP plans. Despite having to go through IVF we’re healthy and rarely go to the doctor but I know with IVF and a possible pregnancy that could all change. Would love feedback on what has been helpful - HDHP is what I’m leaning towards!Deloitte

Yes, I’m always wary of excess supplementation and binary opinions of western versus alternative medicine. I think the best thing integrative medicine has given us is a reminder that we can’t use a traditional one-size-fits-all approach in our patients. I also appreciate the approaches that minimize cost and potential harm, like culinary medicine (spices, herbs that people may already have in their kitchen and cook with that may have small studies to support their use), community acupuncture (usually sliding scale basis ~$10/session or free depending on location), mindfulness based techniques.
Most of us were trained to be science based clinicians, and hence the idea to question the validity of new “cures” and “remedies” is inherent to our thinking process. Younger generations are taught to “question everything” and apply the scientific method. We know that many medications and therapies we use would not pass a rigorous scientific review, yet we continue to use them in clinical practice.
We must be cautious endorsing “natural remedies” that can cause more harm than good. I still get patients coming into my practice who are using colloidal Silver and refusing all vaccines, as they are “unnatural” and not recommended by their alternative health provider. Of course this “provider” is selling them these remedies through their office, and making profit from the patient’s lack of knowledge.
It can be a very slippery slope.
On a personal note, I enjoy sports and deep tissue massage for chronic pain associated with too many years of abusing my body running, skiing, swimming, mountain biking, and just plain hard use!
As long as it doesn’t interact with, and they remain compliant on the real treatment, all good!
