I work at a school with limited resources. My walls are a dingy white, the tables are old, harsh fluorescent lighting, etc. What are some suggestions for creating a warm/inviting classroom space?

Bright colored posters all over the walls!

Can you paint your walls? Lamps? Plants? Can you get anyone to donate alternate kinds of tables?

The first week of school all parents were sent letters asking for various items sanitizer, tissues, tape, glue it unbelievably what had and still have just ask. You may be presently surprised.

Have a painting party and paint your classroom. Put light blue fabric over half of the lights to cut down the glare.

Contact paper on cabinets and tables! Cheap shower curtains or table clothes for wall coverings (if paint is too much/fire Marshall approves) or you could have kids paint posters and switch them out yearly!

There is "color" research out there that suggests painting walls and using colors as you would naturally see in nature such as beige sand colors, or cool green grass colors, or soft sky blue colors. Use yellow and read ONLY as they occur in nature which is sparingly (like rose red or sunset orange) and then bring in small green plans to set around the room. I've been in two schools who adopted this and was amazing at the physiological response from myself when I entered the school building. It's relaxing. And students can better focus. Also, a soft waterfall in the background for background noise.

I found light covers for $13 on amazon and got enough to cover half of my lights to soften the fluorescent light. I also brought in a few lamps.

Paint your walls - make one a chalkboard wall. Add low level lighting/Christmas lights so you don’t have to rely on fluorescent lighting. Add lots of art posters, shabby chairs, plants, and - voila - you’re set!

comfy furniture like rugs and bean bag chairs

Buy pots and flower seeds ,call it a science project. Grow flowers and learn about plants and fill your room with plants.

Pencil dipped in paint and shoved in my new electric sharpener. There are acts of destruction daily in my classroom. Most of my classes are 25 kids in a small room. When my attention is taken for a second, someone does something like this. Gluing things to counters. Hiding paintbrushes instead of cleaning them. 15 years, I've tried everything to cultivate a respectful classroom culture, and they just don't care. I'm so tired. So, so tired. I don't know how much longer I can do this.

Our school uses Foss Kits for Science and I was told when students return, we will need to sanitize all items before and after each use. This doesn’t seem possible in a middle school setting where each period has a 4 minute break and 25 students in each period. What do you do in your classroom to minimize the amount of work needed to clean and sanitize items. I don’t want to short change the students’ hands-on experiences.
