I work at a small firm. We mainly do estate planning. I am considering learning bankruptcy law in my free time and when I feel knowledgeable asking our firm to market for that business. If you taught yourself bankruptcy law I’d love to hear what resources you used. I don’t know anyone that practices in that area to ask questions. Thanks I’m advance.

My girlfriend learned estate planning on her spare time by asking a professor at our local law school to send her the slides and videos. She bought the course book amd went thru the class

What did she do with it after she felt ready to practice in that area? Is she a solo? This interesting to me since I am a solo and would like to do this also. I do only criminal law now.

Real estate law, business law, and tax law are good estate planning adjacent areas as there is a lot of overlap. You might want to consider one of those areas.

Elder law is another area, but I lecture occasionally in that space and many attorneys tell me afterwards that I taught them that they don’t want to practice in that area because there are many nuances and it is fairly complex. But, there are many CLE courses on Medicaid, Veterans Affairs benefits, special needs planning, etc.

If you plan on practicing in that area and discussing VA benefits you will need to become a VA accredited attorney through the VA to discuss VA benefits specifically. I’m not sure that’s a well known rule by those outside of that practice area.

Good point. I would be pretty bummed if that happened.

I’ve now reached the point in my career where I have the experience, a good client base, and consistent referral sources that I’m ready to leave the small firm I’m with and start my own practice. My preference would be to find a partner and form a partnership because I’d like to have someone to bounce ideas off of and for some social interaction, but if I can’t find the right partner, then I’ll do it alone. Any advice on branching off to start my own firm - whether it be solo or with a partner?

Q for associates in boutique litigation firms: When you’ve drafted a complaint/motion/brief to be filed, do the partners allow you to actually sign the filing in your own name? For context, I’m a new associate at a class action firm where there’s ample opportunity to do substantive work & pursue your own case ideas from the get go. Today, I’m getting ready to file a complaint I drafted when a partner told me to remove my signature & insert his instead. Is this standard?

Any suggestions for an organizational/organization expert, coach, or someone that helps with getting firms organized? We need to be more efficient and have better systems in place.

I need someone to help whip us into shape.

Now that I’m 7 months into partnership, I just started a set up for WFH myself. It’s basic right now, but once fully set up, I don’t see a need to go to the office other than client meetings. But in my area of law (domestic relations/family), even in a pandemic, people love to just stop by. So that’s one of my concerns if I transition to WFH.
