Are you someplace cold? Because I can tell you, at 35, I am sitting here in 30-40 degree April weather drinking my coffee and regretting many life decisions. Cost of living may go up, but I would consider quality of living too. Do you like those locations, the culture, the weather, or is either close to family for you? Take that all into consideration.
I personally would make the move. You can always move back to a low cost of living area later and still have that higher ranking /career progression to boost job prospects because you made the move. Sitting still, sure it costs less to live, but what is the opportunity cost of a stagnant career?
That hits home! You are right though. Currently in ga. Looking at the stats for if VA of FL would be the better move for me. Fl is looking good right now, just because it isn’t as costly as the area I would be in in VA
I’ve relocated twice and it was the best thing for me. I say go for it.
Keep in Mind - Florida has no state income tax. Florida has no state income tax. Unless you are living in Miami, Key West, or any other super expensive city, your money will go farther.
I’m 31 now and relocated last July for my role and it’s worked out great for me! If you have the freedom to do it I say go for it!
If they will pay for relocation, I would try for Florida. Moving to Tampa (I believe that is where NFCU has a hub) isn’t the worst thing in the world and you don’t have state income tax so that is a major plus. It’s also become a pretty happening area for people in their 30’s.
Hmm the hq is in Pensacola, I’ve been trying to get a feel for what life may be like there. But the reviews are hit or miss. I do love Santa Rosa beach which I believe is about an hour away, so that is a plus. They do have a relocation program when you move for a “business need” I reached out to HR to see if me getting accepted to a new position would qualify as such. That would help tremendously if so.
I moved to Tampa 3 years ago and I'm so happy I did. But that was right before the crazy housing market. I would just say do your research and make sure you feel comfortable affording it. Yes, no state income tax, but auto / property insurance very pricey!
I’m on the same boat as you are. 31 and working at a small satellite office of a major bank. The only real prospect for career advancement within the company is if I relocate to one of the main hubs in NY or Northern Florida. Love the company and the people I work with but being stuck in the same role hoping to get promoted is not something I would consider wise to do. Specially if you feel you have accomplished the peak. I will be looking externally soon to see what’s out there before thinking about relocating.
Thanks everyone for all the input! Valuable information! Ima weigh my options and see where it takes me, but I’m feeling pulled to Fl :)
Ive lived in VA around the Vienna area where NFCU is. I now live in Pensacola in the Beulah area where NFCU campus is. VA is super expensive compared to Florida. Pensacola’ cost of living is good to me. We were able to buy a 4 bedroom house here, in VA that would have been impossible. However, Pensacola is not a very exciting town. Not much to do unless you travel about an hour away. Pensacola Beach is very nice. Perdido Beach is too. But in VA there are much more things to do. Restaurant options in Pensacola to me are very limited. Beach is doable for about 6 to 7 months in the year. It gets cold but not below freezing. You do have hurricanes and tornadoes. The pensacola campus is amazing though.
I moved to Pensacola from a branch and then from Pensacola to VA. The food is good in Pensacola and the beaches are nice. It’s close to New Orleans or Biloxi for a nice weekend trip. It’s got a nice nightlife if you enjoy going out as well.
I prefer the colder weather. I don’t miss the hurricanes and heat.
