“I help teams and organizations reach their full potential.”
Sure, why not? You don’t have to use it if it doesn’t work for you.
I help people adopt to new situations whenever an organization is changing. I also help leaders understand how to lead during change and what support their people will need to be successful.
Soemtimes I wish I was just a doctor or police officer or something straightforward
I work in change management. I basically try to keep headaches from becoming migraines when organizations are going through big system or process changes.
I know what you mean. I hate when I explain exactly what it is and they say “oh, so basically HR.”
It sounds like you're digging into the details too quickly. You're excited, which is great, but most people just want a high-level understanding. If you work in HR say that and give an overview of the units in HR (Compensation, Rewards & Recognition, Talent Management, etc.). Then highlight where your job falls. You have to meet them where they are, which might be with no understanding of the function you're in and why it's important. It's a communication challenge, if you listen to them they're telling you why.
I just say I do org transformation and if people ask further, I explain what OCM is. If they care enough and want to know, they’ll ask, and if they don’t, they won’t.
It sounds like you don't really want to talk about work/explain the nuances, in which case you can summarize as working in communications. But, even that doesn't always nip it, so your best action may be to turn the conversation back to them or something else.
People don’t really know what HR is either 😂
💯 I still have people who believe we only manage sexual harassment. #clueless
Any time a company is going through a big change - think implementing new software or changing how their organization is structured - I come in to help figure out who that change affects, what the impacts will be, and make sure that everyone is aware and onboard to avoid miscommunications or losses in productivity.
OD is about increasing an organization's vitality and competitive posture by aligning people, process, structure and technology with strategy and the external environment. It involves understanding the psychosocial dynamics of systems and associated archetypes to influence critical decision making processes that drive efficiency and effectiveness. If you are in OD and that doesn't make sense you probably shouldn't be in OD.
I make change palatable
I make sure organization’s change is adopted by their employees.
Way easier than trying to explain to people what I/O Psychology is haha
