I work in advertising as a Media Planning supervisor at an agency. I am exploring switching to PR. I graduated with an AdPR major, have some experience planning events (digital and in person) through work, and worked on the reputation side of my account, advertising positive messaging about the client and reporting on the impact of the message. Always worked on very big brands. How likely am I to land a lateral/higher role in PR, if I’ve never worked in PR per se? I’m looking at ~$130k salary.
I say pretty likely! I have quite a few friends who have made the switch from ad to PR (and vice versa) fairly seamlessly. My only advice would be to start researching the media landscape and reporters a bit! You likely have a ton of skills as a media planner understanding the differences in platforms, so just diving more into the specific outlets and reporters and playing up any relationships you may have!
Thank you so much!!
At that salary you’d need to be a VP in an agency and must be skilled at leading and counseling clients on their business/account with the agency. As long as you can roll with the punches, come up with ideas and solutions to problems and BS that comes with PR and lead the team to meet goals, and contribute well to or bring in new biz, you would be fine.
