I work in industry and I’m getting bored with tax compliance. I found a great opportunity in public accounting but I’m not sure if now is a good time to switch job with this economy and all. Any thoughts? Should I stay put for now?

In a recession, I’d prefer to be in public than in private. When private looks to cut costs, they start outsourcing back office functions like tax compliance so that they can better control payroll, benefits, etc. The public accounting firms can do push that compliance work to offshore service centers at a lower cost than a single company can, so we can give them a more fixed/predictable cost structure. Plus, since there are 4 major firms competing, they can push hard on price.

TS1 what firm are you at. A lot of mid-size firms are trying to overcome away from utilization as a performance metric, and start to recognize efficiency (meaning if you finish a return faster that is better).

I worked at a mid-size firm and during new-hire orientation the head of the tax department told everyone never to eat any hours, and if someone asks you to eat hours to tell him.

Public accounting is generally understaffed. I think you’ll be fine.

I can't speak for everyone but my team would kill for a good experienced hire.

I wouldn’t kill for one. That would be illegal.

CFA or CAIA?

Given the recent correction of tech stocks in the last couple of moments tied with the invasion of Ukraine (heartbreaking), does it makes sense to look for a new position at a smaller startup, or are these companies at even greater risk now due to a potential “bubble pop”, so to speak? Is it better to look for positions at growth companies or larger (FAANG) during these types of market moves? What are everyone’s opinions?

Crossposted. Looking for advice. I’ve got 10+ years as an attorney and have been trying to go in house for over a year. I have a generalist background (although I’m primarily a litigator) and was a partner at an Amlaw 100 firm. I’ve had my resume reviewed and keep getting great feedback. Not getting many interviews and when I do, I’m not getting offers despite positive interviews. How do I differentiate myself? Should I get some sort of certification or specialty? This is getting depressing.

Been working in sales for a little over two years now. Wanting to get out, simply because I only got in to establish some financial freedom and save up for my wedding. My main issue was that since I’ve mainly only been working in sales (outside of some regular customer service experience), it seems to me like I don’t have a lot of the hard skills or degrees that others do. Any suggestions to apply for or advice? I’m located in Charlotte, NC but open to remote as well.

I’m a junior litigation lawyer based in Windsor looking to lateral to corporate big law. I have been doing commercial litigation, tax litigation, and tax planning. I’ve done corporate reorganization, corporate structuring, rollovers so corporate would not be completely new to me. Your advice is greatly appreciated.

I’m a bit self-conscious about what people think of me, and I feel like this is hindering my ability to act the way a manager should. It’s my first time in this type of role and I’m realizing I have some growth to do if I wanna keep the job.

Curious question, my experience is with Amazon, Google, and Salesforce. I’m currently trying to find a new role that better aligns with my career goals and growth I’d like to see. I have been interviewing and it seems I’m catching more attention to other bigger companies compared to smaller ones. Is it the way I speak that it seems the smaller companies think I’m “cocky”? I’d rather go to a smaller company but I have had no luck. I answer truthfully with every question but the recruiters don’t

We are having a meeting about how to enter in time correctly. When are firms going to realize that there is no incentive from the seniors and below to spend too much time being accurate on time entry. I understand the value of the data, but the data is not reliable or relevant. When are we going to start measuring on results instead of time?
