I work in investment banking and am just going to be returning from maternity leave in one week. I was recruited from another bank to join my firm at the beginning of 2022 on the verbal promise I’d be promoted to VP by end of year, and am worried that because I was off for ~3 month Mat leave I will be held back from promotion to VP and a good bonus. What do you think? If this plays out for the worst (ie no promo and bad bonus), do I have grounds for legal action? Just curious

I think you’re too in your head- wait and see what happens.

Either way there’s nothing to sue for. If your bonus/raise doesn’t play out the way you want it’s more likely about performance or market conditions than your maternity leave

Everything must be in writing, any promise not kept in writing then yes you can process legal action with EEOC

I’m in a similar position. They take on legal liability if they fire you because of maternity leave, but passing you for a promotion is in the gray area yet still legally and reputationally risky for them. I am in a similar spot and I realized that they’d be basically pushing me out if they don’t give me a promotion they promised. And I’d take that message and leave unhappy. If they cared they would give you the promo.

Some women at my firm even go on maternity leave to avoid getting laid off. It’s an increasingly protected status and you should be aware of your rights as a woman. My understanding is they can’t legally deny you a promotion because you were gone for 3 months on maternity leave, while you can argue that it was implicit in their decision making whatever excuse they give you.

Fairly certain that I just had a career first. I managed to keep up with and use a legal pad all the way to completion. Pretty sure that should unlock some sort of bonus points or prize or something.

As I get older and have less of the rose tinted glasses perspective that I did coming into the industry, I've been slowly becoming more worried about the potential for layoffs (not firing). I feel like it's normal and bound to happen to most people due to factors outside of their control, whether they're at an agency, client side etc. I think this comes from a deep rooted trauma as a child where my single parent became unemployed and we were homeless for a bit. But is this a normal fear?

I made the error of telling a recruiter my minimum preference of salary when she asked target salary. She confirmed that’s in line with the role pay scale plus a small bonus. The employer now made me an offer for this exact amount & small bonus.
Do I live with my error and just accept and potentially leave $ on the table? Or is it acceptable to counter with 5k more for example, (seeing as everyone usually recommends countering and that the employer is expecting a counter/can always do better)
