Have you considered clip in colored ombré extensions for nights/weekends? Or dying the ends but pulling back into a bun for work. In the end it unfortunately will effective perception in the industry/federal but you can probably only decide which is more important for you.

like

Yes! I wanted to dye my ends so that could work and Iam thinking light pastels so it wouldn't be super obvious

like

Personally, I wouldn’t. I also have always wanted to do a few fun colored streaks, but I also don’t want to give them another reason to treat me less than. NOW if you can hide them somehow during zoom calls, Quarantine is the time to experiment.
I’m also blonde, 26 and work with federal clients.

I have worked with federal clients for a few years and have consistently had non-traditional hair color incorporated...I come from a large tech company/coding background where it’s accepted. I’ve found that times are different and it’s more widely accepted. No one has ever had an issue but i’m also very comfortable with who I am and owning standing out. Comes with the look and being the only female in the room most days, so...why not stand out. But—that’s just my take. Several of my mentors also have “fun” hair and are directors of major institutions or much higher than me at software companies. Don’t feel pressured to conform. It’s not anywhere in our policies. Keep it tasteful. Wear it confidently. Senior level, in my 30s.

like

That's why I don't want to just not do it. I want to do what makes me happy and not conform to some random standard set by old white men.

like

OP, are you in more of a tech or strategy space? I’ve worked with female federal contractors with blue and pink hair, but both were in very tech-heavy roles with little interface with federal executives. I’d say it’s much more acceptable in that type of role than in a more sales or strategy-heavy role where you need to present to federal executives, who tend towards the conservative and formal. Edit to add, I think colored hair is awesome and I wish people didn’t judge, but to be realistic, they do.

Strategic but is designed based and more innovative than most.

And totally agree!

I really like this. I get that it could make some things more difficult but the change has to start somewhere

like

But it does. I have wanted to dye my hair different colors for a long time. Specially, I'm blonde and want to try blue and purple highlights on the ends. Being young (25) and female is hard in the government and I don't want to make things harder on myself. My Deloitte coworkers and awesome and encouraging me but I wanted to see what other professional woman think.

Thank you so much! I really appreciate the context. I was thinking pastel colors on the ends of my hair and trying it at home during all this but it might not be back to normal when I go back to work so I was torn. I have really supportive coworkers so I might try it out and see how it's taken 😊

Why don’t you wear wings on the weekend to satisfy your urge? If I saw a 25 yr old with blue hair in a professional government meeting, I would think she is young and naive and doesn’t get it. Do want you want on your personal time, while someone is paying hundreds $ for you as a consultant, professional appearance is expected. There are plenty of jobs in tech and other firms/fields that could be a better fit for ‘freestyle’ looks.

That's so awesome. I really admire your tenacity and confidence!

Unfortunately I don't think the bold hair colors will flying in your current setting. Something more natural (even if it's not your natural) may be okay. Otherwise, I would seriously consider what that type of attention will do. If you're on a long term assignment and highly respected by your client and your tram, you might be able to pull it off and could float the idea...what do you think about...what would you do if I...

But at the end of the day, you're in a much more conservative job and you're young. I don't know if you want to be the one pushing those boundaries.

You just need to know your audience. At my job, there are some clients where it is okay to show up on the nicer side of business casual. Other clients you would be out of place in anything less than a suit. People dress accordingly.

Hello, I work at company that does early intervention for kids with ASD! I’ve looked online and ranger for coordinator role is $75,000-$85,000 depending on experience. I have two years experience now being in my new role. I got a really sweet email from OC (female) today after settling a case, thanking me and my supervisor (who also happens to be a female) for being reasonable and cooperative, while still strongly advocating for my clients. I get the billable requirement, I get that the profession is naturally adversarial, but this email gives me hope that just maybe a tide is turning in this profession, especially as more women join. Would love to hear more stories like this.

I’m on an exponential trajectory at my current consulting job, will likely make partner in 4 years tops. I’ve just started communicating my notice to the partners I work with and they’re casting so much doubt in my head. New job, VP, global company, high visibility. Large base increase, double % bonus than current, equity…however, their point is that in consulting, I’ll far pass all of that in 4-5 years and keep going. I worry about giving away my book of business and failing in industry…

It’s been a rough couple months professionally for my boyfriend. The job he was at got to be toxic and draining, so was interviewing trying to get a new job, then he finally had an offer and was interviewing with another firm too. The one that gave him the offer only raised his salary by 6k - he was at a nonprofit so was already not making very much. The other company would have been giving him 95k, guaranteed raises, etc. Realistically it was the type of role that would have truly changed..
