I worked as a contractor in my early career. I usually list the client names in resume when applying for jobs. Is it a red flag for potential employer if they find out I contracted with the company and that I wasn't employed with them?

I worked a contract role and just put the company name...the staffing agency barely had anything to do with it other than getting a piece of my income

like

Actually I did have to provide my W2 and confirmed it was a contract role with the background check company (I shared in the interview so didn’t withhold anything) but other than that no one cares. Someone asks why I was in the role for 3 months and I just say it was a contract role and I was went to BCG immediately after. Not gonna squeeze Robert Half into my already packed resume just to do some free marketing for them.

If your contract is via an agency to the client, the agency is irrelevant to include, they're just the middlemen. You should be putting the client, that's the relevant party, that's the location you worked. If you're perm through somewhere, then the middlemen company is the relevant party not the clients.

like

Yes. If the rain for your employment is the client, and if the client goes away the relationship with the agency goes away, the agency doesn't matter in that case and you put the client on your resume.

likesmart

You mean you only put the client on your resume? Not the contracting firm? Definitely not okay. Also probably shouldn’t name the client regardless

like

I think they’re talking about very entry level roles - I don’t think the consulting rules of not naming the client applies here.

like

Just add (contract) after the role on your resume, or "Contracted to..." In the description. I can usually tell if someone has been a contractor because they have a series of 4-8 month roles scattered through their resume. It's easier to understand if you group them under something like "Independent Contractor, May 2017 - June 2020".

like

I do this as well. Worked in contract roles early on in my career. Hasn’t been a problem in interviews or background check.

I think this might vary by industry? I know of several occasions where we had contractors for example and saw that they put that they worked for us on LinkedIn and kindly reached out to them to tell them to change their LinkedIn to tell them that they can’t list us without their agency. It’s fine if you put Company A and then in the first line put “12 month contractor gig, etc” but I would reject if you didn’t disclose that you were a contractor instead of an employee.

I have no issue with folks saying “I was a contractor at Google, and led XYZ project.” I do have an issue if you say “I worked at Google and led XYZ project” and pretend like you were a full time employee. I can’t tell but the sense I get OP is that you’re not disclosing that you were a contractor. If that’s not the case then yes, you’re right it doesn’t matter.

I've become really jaded about consulting. I find all so often you need to tell the client what they want to hear to keep their business and I feel like so much of the what I recommend doesn't actually get implemented. I'm looking to make a career switch so I can both create and execute on my strategies. A product management path seems very promising for this. Does anyone who switched from consulting to product management have any recommendations of h helpful PM books, courses, or programs?
