I would appreciate any advice on how to stay on top of non urgent tasks. As a 2nd year, I’m often tapped to handle tedious tasks that need to get done quickly. Tbh, I like urgent matters. It motivates me and helps me focus. I admittedly struggle to care about checking in on DWQs, record requests, OC’s discovery, scheduling matters, etc. Especially with so many cases. I definitely rely heavily (maybe over rely?) on the paralegals for these sort of things. Any tips?

Calendar the deadlines with reminders a couple days and a week out. Or just keep a word doc with a list of deadlines organized by date so you can keep it open and see what’s coming up at a glance.

New update. I shifted into a higher volume practice where recalling status and deadlines is key. What I’ve found to work for me so far is a Word doc table that is color coded. For example, yellow rows need some action, deadlines are in red text, etc. that way I can, at a glance, see what’s going on in each matter.

Eventually may shift to Excel...

Familiarize yourself with all of the wonderful time management/reminder functions that Microsoft Outlook performs.

Create a spreadsheet with all cases that contains dates you've done things and dates things are due. Update religiously. Review it every Sunday night.

Delegate anything you can to support staff.

Frustratingly, the thing I found most helpful has been an old school desk calendar. I have to believe there’s a more modern way to do this though...

like

Docket review weekly or biweekly.

Action lists. A bullet point list with actual actions you have to take. Write them down when you get them.

If you use a writing pad for you action list, then you can also use it as a mouse pad and never lose sight of it.

I’m bad at that too. I usually start my mornings with the tasks that can get lost in the shuffle once I start getting assignments for the day, so I’m usually able to carve out an hour or two before I start getting bothered with other stuff.

Can anyone provide some insight as to what exit opportunities there are for someone who practices Securities Lit/Arb? Is it possible to jump from lit to transactional work into a firm doing capital markets, fund formation, or M&A? Thanks in advance!

A recruiter let me know about a lit. opportunity at an AmLaw 100 firm.

In my opinion, I don't need a recruiter to have a chance with this firm, but do I have any obligation to use them instead of just reaching out to the firm directly?

Does anyone know if in a negligent supervision case against a school district if it’s any kind of mitigating factor that there was not enough money for the school to hire more staff? (Fight broke out between students and there weren’t enough staff to prevent injuries. They would have had more stuff, but there was no budget for it.) Any thoughts? I know the school is held to the reasonable supervision standard. Is it possible they acted reasonably given the constraints of the limited budget?
