I would like to add Payroll and benefits administration to my field of knowledge. Has anyone done that recently? How difficult was it to learn. I've only done the basic employee set up in Payroll but never the "process" I know nothing about benefits.

Its not difficult once you have a proper training. Also is just a matter of having a great step process to follow at the beginning. The rest is just practicing and learning the software that your using properly. In my case I use ADP and their support system is great to help you learn and understand everything that the platform has to offer.

I agree. You have people who complain so much about payroll and I never understood why from what I saw but I didn't want to belittle anyone's pain (lol)

I don't have experience running payroll, but I do in benefits administration. Prior to my current company I was responsible for general benefits support for new hires, facilitating open enrollment, and helping to educate on benefits year round which in itself can be confusing. True benefits administration is math (understanding loss ratios), federal compliance/reporting, and negotiation heavy during the renewal process. Whether you are fully insured or self funded also changes the complexity significantly. I would see if you can spend time with those in your company who currently administer benefits during the renewal process and prep for open enrollment. This will give you a base line before jumping into any formal education. I have been learning through my failures for two years and still have so much to learn. Good luck!

Thank you this is excellent advice.

Payroll really depends on if you are using a TPA. If you've got a payroll company then you don't really need to know much beyond general FLSA laws and some general taxing laws. The payroll company should manage most of the specifics and tax filings for you. It's more of understanding the internal processes.

Benefits is a whole other arena. There are a multitude of types of benefits and laws around each of those. Group benefit plans and retirement plans. Then under Group plans there are self funded or fully insured, there are Affordable Care Act requirements. For Retirement plans there are entirely different sets of regulations and plan setups. This is why a lot of companies have sole benefits departments. Benefits laws and regulations are vast and you need specialized knowledge.

Ahh....Prevailing Wage does add more complexity to Payroll. I'm guessing that everything has been structured for base + fringe benefits. Or you are paying all in wages? That's part of the difficulty with Prevailing Wage. Once that's established it's just getting the tracking mechanism and ensuring staff os being coded to the right roles on the PW job roles.

I have an interview tomorrow with a recruiter for a federal contractor agency. The position is a data entry support (hybrid) for a bank. They explained the salary $18 and some change, presented benefits, and surface details in the job.

My last full time job paid $21 with an inconsistent schedule while this one is technically salary with full time hours.

Can I negotiate? I'd at least like $20 since this job is a stepping stone for me.

Company is KACE Company/Providencia Group.

Totally new to this subject, so please pardon any ignorance. How do you recommend best making use of my savings? In my first job out of college, no debt, have about 25k saved between a standard savings account and a brokerage account. I’m able to save about 1-1.5k of my salary monthly. What’s the best way to divide my savings? Should I max out my Roth while I’m in a lower tax bracket and then prioritize 401k? What are my options, and what resources are out there for guidance and info? Thank you!
