I would love thoughts on two Tax Manager offers I am deciding between:

Job 1: Startup company in the travel industry (I ❤️ travel)
Potential IPO in the next few years, large growth
Mix remote/in office. 30 min commute
I will be their entire tax dept for now
Same base salary as job 2, with 20% bonus potential
Loss company

Job 2: Publicly traded company, well established
Has a tax dept (5+ people)
Fully remote
Good growth + ESPP (5% discount)
10% bonus potential
Significant international ops

Job 2. Without a doubt. It’s your first job out of PA, and you need to be surrounded by other professionals to learn from.

like

Startup has higher risk and potentially higher reward. Startups generally are dumpster fires from an accounting/tax perspective. You will probably be putting out a lot of fires and working more. The other job sounds more established and will probably mean a better WLB. Depends on what type of experience you are looking for.

like

Accurate. For me with the risk I would expect them to pay base above market rates and have a bonus plan with lots of potential.

I should mention - this would be my first job outside of public accounting.

like

How many years of experience do you have?

I went with job 1 right out of PA. I don't prepare anything and only manage external advisors and learn from them. The good thing about this is I get to see everything and be involved in M&A taxes and I have only one boss so there are only two people in the tax department. You can be a generalist and then specialize later but I think it's less boring than working on only one or things. Definitely negotiate for a higher base because #1 sounds harder.

like

I wasn’t trying to pick on you or anything. Was just trying to get a better idea and that was very helpful. Looks like you see a little bit of everything coming across your plate. Do you feel that you are learning enough about each issue?

like

Is Job 1 expecting you to do the work yourself? Or are you managing external advisors?

What level are you to be at job 2?

Also, what’s the salary, roughly? You may think it’s irrelevant but it’s really not.

No worries!! I think my position is also very unique. When we have capacity in the future, we will bring more things in house. Yes, I do learn a lot but they are very specific to our industry so if I were to go to a different Industry, it will be quite different.

California tax question. I moved overseas in November 2020 establishing a rental agreement in a different country. I sold my California registered car in May 2021 (my ONLY California asset). In total, I spent ~36 days in California during 2021. I use my mother's California house as an address to receive packages and letters. I don't intend to return to California, as I want to buy a house in Texas. I have a potential $70,000 CA tax bill due to capital gains from a long-term investment.
