Move to Singapore
Haven’t done this, but I can tell you this from experience dealing with people from Asia. Good places for Corporate Finance - Singapore, Hong Kong, Kuala Lumpur, Tokyo. Mind you, WLB is crap! They work 12-18 hours a day in even accounting jobs that don’t need you to! So be prepared for that. Best thing would be to move early on as you can be more adaptive and if you don’t like it, you can come back. It’s difficult to switch countries, careers, etc as you get older.
Don’t think money wise it’ll be significantly better for you, because most Asian currencies are weaker than USD. Also, cheap but no social benefits like healthcare, free education, etc. Getting citizenship or permanent residency takes a good amount of time - say more than 8-10 years so you’re on employer sponsored visa which means shifting jobs is tricky. You’ll have to find a new employer to re-sponsor visa each time.
Yea, WLB in Western or American turns will still be terrible. With culture evolves to become similar to the local culture and the origin of a company doesn’t matter much.
You’ll need atleast 2-3 years work ex anyways to move abroad. And if your current firm doesn’t allow, you’ll have to look outside
Also, if you’re American you don’t get the tax benefits, other than not paying state tax.
I know 😭
If I may suggest South Korea would be the best and it is better to move there after 2-3 years of your working experience in the state. Best of luck!
South Korea’s work life balance is terrible!
