Hi Fishies! (Is that what we are? I’m going with it)
I just came across a Google Research and Insights role that got me SUPER excited and I was about to apply when I had the idea of seeing if anyone would be willing to give me a referral. I understand (and respect) that most of you Googlers on here feel that a referral is only useful if you know the person but I would be happy to jump on the phone to give you some info about me. It would mean so much! 4 YOE at a major audio steaming service

Sorry but Lee Clow is a legend. David Ogilvy, George Lois, also legends. There wont be another one because advertising isnt considered artistic or entertaining anymore (not to mention that people who work in advertising arent interested in its history, like you arent) but it used to take real talent to make work that consistently got noticed and talked about by the general public (if we can even imagine that now).
such a brave confession.
The amount of ego in this business is ridiculous but usually the people who are actually considered legends seem quite humble. It's the ones who believe they are destined to be legends who are the issue.
You are a legend for saying this
Even the best advertising is still advertising.
Weird flex, but ok.
Don Draper though?
Remember kid, there's heroes and there's legends. Heroes get remembered but legends never die, follow your heart kid, and you'll never go wrong.
Agree with PI&C(?). There are some amazing and humble people in this business who have changed companies' fortunes. And I don't get the 'It's just advertising argument.' Sure, we're not saving lives. But if there is celebration of success in other fields, why not this? I'd rather acknowledge someone who cracked an impossible brief and created an amazing ad that is talked about for decades than have to watch middle-aged, face-painted high fives for, let's face it, a small amount of seriously overpaid individuals whose talent is throwing, kicking or hitting a ball. Don't get me wrong, I love individuals that are great at sport, or music, or chemistry, or especially those that save lives. But I don't think it has to be this grandiose disdain for the good ones who have chosen to simply make ads. Bankers. That's who we should all be hating on.
Let’s talk about the legendary assholes...
David Ogilvy?
Legends...😂. We make ads for Christ sake
OP & CD / CW 1 - Take your self loathing somewhere else, friends. Just like any other profession, we can celebrate outstanding talent in ours.
PI&C, you’re right, but that tends to be the case in most industries. However, Floyd Mayweathers, Steve Jobs and Michael Jordans exist in all fields as well, being both undeniably excellent and terribly self-centered. Legends don’t have to be liked.
Howard Luck Gossage is a legend to me. He happened to be in advertising
Great stuff from CD3 and Freelance BBDO 1. I would add, OP, that if you truly feel no one in advertising was/is a legend, then it’s time for you to find another profession where you can admire people to that level and truly aspire to that level of greatness. Without that potential, then what exactly are you doing with your life?
Then addressing AD1’s “we make ads” post. Clear to me here that you’ve never firsthand experienced advertising’s power to single handedly change the fortunes of a company, watched successful franchisees of your client cry tears of joy and gratitude that they don’t need to shut their business, because of a campaign you’ve created. It’s so easy to become cynical in this industry but we truly are here to help change the businesses of our clients - and there are agencies out there truly striving to do this. I recommend you try to get a job at one of these agencies.
Leo Burnett?
Howard Gossage and George Lois absolutely
@AD1, It sounds like you've never had the opportunity to work with one of (or the many) legendarily talented and humble people in this industry focused on commerce's (not Christ's) sake. Perhaps that would change your perspective.
