I wrote "think creatively" in my notes I took on this assignment while talking to the partner. Unfortunately I'm a lawyer... so the best I've managed so far is a checklist for the assignment that includes "think creatively." Anyone else struggle with solving truly novel problems? The pandemic has created plenty of them, but I feel like a failure when I can't find law or cases on point and have to get "creative."

Google, look up cases with similar issues, or just pretend you’re in a movie and make something crazy up 😅

Google mind mapping... it’s a creative writing tool mostly I think but it has helped me organize my thoughts on legal issues/projects with lots of moving parts that are connected in more of a web-shape than linear.

This is my most favorite thing! I love thinking through novel legal issues and finding creative solutions. In these cases, it’s often about risk more than a right or wrong answer. Think in terms of risk and the issues as opposed to finding a non-existent golden nugget of an answer.

I roll my eyes at “think creatively.” Absolutely do try to find good solutions for clients, but in my personal experience “think creatively” means “the client is totally fucked here but I am hesitant to tell them that immediately so I am sending you down a time-wasting research wormhole.”

If you find an actual creative solution - kudos! But don’t be disappointed if you don’t, and most importantly remember to turn your focus to best possible damage control options so you don’t come back totally empty handed.

I’ve been browsing Chrono24 a lot lately with a budget around $3500. Styles I like are Daytona (way outside of my range), seamaster, soeedmaster, Carrera, Navitimer etc. I also have always had a soft spot for vintage oysterdate but thinking they are on the small side. If I buy on the used market, what should I be keeping an eye out for?

In the category of “first world problems...”. Am I crazy to want to trade in my Daytona for a new Kermit Submariner? Biggest reason is I actually don’t like the face of the Daytona— it is hard to ready the time at a quick glance. I actually also miss the date. Am I nuts?

The hill I am prepared to die on is that John Roberts is a coward and not a secret, liberal hero. His concurrence today is, in all but its form, a plea to be given an easier job—one in which he wouldn’t have to think about the fact or severity of an infringement of rights. No one praise him for it: it’s what he wants and expects, and he hasn’t done enough (read: anything) to earn it.

Ever since I became a lawyer, almost ten years ago, I feel like the time just flies by. Anyone have any insight into how well state AG positions set you up for their federal corollaries? I am interviewing with a specialist branch of a ~more noteworthy~ states attorney general office (think securities/antitrust/consumer protection, think NY/CA). I think a big factor is how well this would set me up for SEC/FTC/CFPB etc. I might want to stay, but wondering how fed govt hiring managers might view the experience (when they often hire from biglaw). I otherwise have biglaw credentials

Has anyone had experience waiving into DC Bar? I’ve submitted all the paperwork in February and it was just two weeks ago that they notified me that they accepted my application for processing. As a mid-level associate, what is an appropriate amount of notice to give your firm when you leave? I’m running a couple deals right now and do not want to leave my team in a bind...so 2 weeks seems far too short. That said, I also want to take some actual time off before starting a new role. Not sure how much time new employer is willing to give me before starting...I suspect max 6 weeks.
