I don’t see any issue with this story. Why does everyone get so butthurt about ICE enforcing immigration laws?

like

Uhh, maybe because they even deported people who transferred out after realizing it was a scam. Immigration law enforcement isn’t supposed to be about penalizing students who got duped *by* the government. Not to mention they kept the students’ money. How is *that* enforcing the law?

like

“The students had arrived legally in the U.S. on student visas, but since the University of Farmington was later revealed to be a creation of federal agents, they lost their immigration status after it was shut down in January.” So confusing: Bring people here legally. Shut down the mechanism for allowing them entry. Then deport them as if they were the criminals. Yes, OP - ICE is out of control. They were duped by our government.

The students and recruiters picked this specific school because they were told it gets them a visa and they don’t have to actually attend classes. They were trying to manipulate the system and were caught which is why the vast majority of them voluntarily returned home when caught and confronted with the evidence

Piecing together what I can from what is said and not said in the articles from right and left. It looks like all of the students were here on legally issued student visas - some of them originally issued to go to other universities which then closed. Perhaps some got their visa initially to attend Framingham - though perhaps not. For those who originally attended other universities, as soon as their university closed, their immigration status was in jeopardy and they looked for someplace they could get into quickly that was accredited so they could keep their status. The govt claims the students “must have known” that Framingham was immigration fraud and no classes would take place, because no classes *did* take place in the month or so the university was open before it was shut down. That said, with no previous school year from which prospective students could have asked around, it’s hard to know what the students actually expected - which would have had to be informed by the advertising and recruitment materials which none of the articles describe. As far as we know, Framingham may have advertised classes and then not held them, or advertised programs without being specific about classes, and found that was enough to dupe a vulnerable population who was concerned first and foremost with maintaining their legal status, and secondarily with how to get their education back on track.

I guess my problem is why did we (the US, represented by our government) do this? If there are schools doing it, shut them down and the flow of student stops.

I think Obama is in on it. Setting it up for Trump to finish the job.

“Sophistication” is one thing. Running a honeypot and taking millions from vulnerable international students is a scam pure and simple.

Well... it was half sarcasm given how everyone is going to up in arms anyway in this bowl about this current administration, and get outraged. So, just pointing it out before it gets started. On a serious side, you can call it conspiracy but how does 2 administrations in on this same entrapment? At least I thought the previous one wouldn’t sign off on anything like this, would they?

Do you care to comment on the actual issue or just point out who started it?
