I’d like to get modest appreciation gifts for some of the junior associates I work with (think bottle of wine, maybe chocolate), but some are in other offices. Any recommendations on how to do this, or should I just send them a gift card?

I'd take a good review over a bottle of wine any day.

I send gifts via inter-office mail.

Gift card is a bit transactional.

If you are sure they drink, wine/scotch/etc are great.

Otherwise, I usually get gifts based on their interests (golf, woodworking, etc.).

Also, don’t underestimate the value of taking them out to a nice lunch, one on one. This isn’t a “I’m blessing you with my presence thing”, but shows that you are invested in them. They realize that your time is valuable.

A fifth year did that for me a few times a quarter when I was a first year and I learned a lot. Partners have done the same, and same thing.

You could do a nice bottle of wine, bourbon, mezcal or a bottle of Vueve. I feel like Veuve is always something that punches above it's price tag in terms of value. If you're in a market with sports you may also consider tickets to an event. You could also do a gift card at a really nice restaurant. That said, think a gift card to like an apparel store would be weird though, lol.

My gift will be withholding a new project until Sunday evening. I still need it done by Monday at 9 am though…

Cash. $100 for every year you are senior to them.

Associates don't give junior associates cash.

Don’t do a ton of personal flying. Thanks in advance.

After clerking, my BF recently accepted an offer from and joined a V50 firm (been there a few weeks). Shortly before his start date, he heard back from a V5 firm (one he’s wanted to join for a while) and just got an even better offer. Practice groups at each firm are also different.

The office he joined for the V50 firm is in City A. The office for the V5 firm is in City B (where V50 firm also has an office).

How should he break the news to the V50 firm to minimize reputational risk, etc.?
