First year lawyer - do senior lawyers and partners expect you to bother them to ask for work?

I’m looking for some new things to read or listen to — doesn’t need to be ad-related. Books, podcasts, whaddya got?
I’m not really into fiction, but open to anything. Last books I enjoyed were Junior and Moonwalking with Einstein, last podcast I binged was Startup (Gimlet).

Does HSBC support certifications like CFA, FRM? Do they reimburse it?

Is anyone on a for-profit Board? How did you get on the Board?

Opinions: Is it harder to work for male providers or female? I am wondering if medical providers are easier as managers than dental?

What are your favorite "must do" things in Atlanta? I haven't been here long and my parents are coming, so, they'll want to embarrass me as much as possible at as many tourist hot spots as possible, but also I really want them to have a good time :)

Recently joined a consulting firm and have a corporate AmEx now. I am planning on paying the $95 fee to get the points from corporate expenses. I also have only a chase sapphire preferred. Is it worth picking up a Gold or Platinum card to pool all the points in one place? I eat out a lot and mostly redeem points for statement credit or the occasiaonl hotel room (use Marriott). Don’t do a ton of personal flying. Thanks in advance.

I’ve increasingly been using retail therapy and have forayed into expensive luxury items such as designer sunglasses (LV) and coats (Burberry) — can anyone whose further down this road tell me what the natural progression of this is and whether I should stop now or carry on?

My team is great and includes me in activities, like dep prep, in which I’m unlikely to contribute hugely given that I’m a junior. But how can I get over feeling completely useless during such activities? I get really anxious and feel like I’m not contributing/wasting the firm’s money

3rd year transaction associate - I always seem to make errors under the pump (urgent entry of numbers or details at closing) etc - how can I improve this? The normal advice of taking the time to re-check etc doesn’t really work because it’s urgent!! Help

After clerking, my BF recently accepted an offer from and joined a V50 firm (been there a few weeks). Shortly before his start date, he heard back from a V5 firm (one he’s wanted to join for a while) and just got an even better offer. Practice groups at each firm are also different.

The office he joined for the V50 firm is in City A. The office for the V5 firm is in City B (where V50 firm also has an office).

How should he break the news to the V50 firm to minimize reputational risk, etc.?

6 month long probation period at new job is right around the corner (end of May). If I’ve heard nothing on this from my team/HR, is that good news? I’d been slightly worried due to the slow down in PE/M&A deals at my firm (billables changed from 200 in Jan to 120 in April).

For the last four weeks or so of WFH I’ve been making it to my desk around 7:30/8am and working basically without a break—lunch at desk- but cannot maintain momentum past like 6:30/7:30pm. Most of the day is billable work, but I cannot bring myself to finish outstanding assignments after 8pm, but then feel so guilty when I’m not working past that time. Am I burnout or fucked up? (Also I hate this gig & am not in it for the long haul, just hate not turning things quickly)

I’m an associate trying to exit biglaw and there is a current job posting for in-house counsel at one of the firm’s smaller clients. I’m tempted to apply, but scared it’s going to get back to the client’s shareholder contact that I’m looking. Anyone with any insight on this? In a similar vein, has anyone been honest about looking for exiting opportunities with shareholders such that they maybe can help place you somewhere strategic for them and the pipeline of work in the future?

First year associate here. Does anyone know of a handy tool/website/software that allows you to easily track people’s availability for scheduling calls? I currently do it manually and it’s quite inefficient and sloppy.

I need help with what my next career move should be! I’m a 3rd year complex lit associate at a V50 firm moving to a Midwest city with limited biglaw options. I’m very interested in white collar and employment law, but they’re very different with different career trajectories. I have more experience in white collar but have always been interested in employment. I don’t want to lose the complex cases big law offers — will I even get those kinds of cases at a firm like Littler? (More below)

I had to eat a lot of class years when joining big law. I didn’t go T14, didn’t get a summer job in big law, had to work my way up and finally got here. I’m at a great firm doing the exact work I like doing. Now, all around me, colleagues who graduated with me or after me are getting promoted and I’m still a long ways away. They all deserve it. But I can’t help but feel jealous and angry about the uncertainty ahead of whether I’ll make it there and how long it will take. Can anyone relate?

Anyone successfully take a couple hours off every evening (e.g., 5-7 pm) before logging back on for dinner, gym, family time etc.? How is it working out for you? Do people know this schedule of yours? Any advice on how to incorporate?
