I’d love to know how other people handle emails/notifications outside of work hours. Do you have notifications on? I personally don’t need to at my current role but am job searching and am coming to terms with the fact I might need to. I just hate the feeling of being “off” work and still seeing all the emails/notifications. I feel like I need to address it right away. I’m big on work life balance and having a separation but it seems like it isn’t all that realistic for some jobs

I have a separate phone for work. If someone doesn’t tell me towards the end of business hours that I need to he available or I’m waiting for something, I usually turn the sound off and leave it at my desk by my computer.

like

I have my work email on my phone. I turned off notifications a year ago when on maternity leave, and I never turned them back on afterwards. Best decision ever! This allows me to enjoy my evenings & weekends without getting distracted by constant notifications. I do check occasionally, especially if I'm expecting something important or when I'm out on PTO (to confirm no major disasters and delete junk emails). But it's at my discretion, when I'm ready to look at my email.

like

Boundaries.

Separate phone and laptop for work.

Stated working and off hours.

Do not answer unless pre discussed.

I will absolutely lean in to support emergencies.

like

"pre discussed" is a good one

I have all my emails and chats go to my phone all hours, it doesn’t really bother me. I’ve always done it this way just because I like to be in the loop, especially when you work remote. I don’t respond to anything after hours though unless it’s a real emergency (maybe happened once). I especially like it if I took off early or will start late due to an appt, it just helps me stay aware of what’s going on until I’m back in work mode.

like

Absolutely not. If it’s near a deadline and the team communicates it beforehand I will but otherwise I will give a little scolding for contacting my personal phone. Be a team player but keep a line in the sand

like

Two phones.

like

My company’s phone system can ring through Teams, so although we can give out our personal number it isn’t required. I only get notifications during my regular work hours, unless I’m traveling for a meeting when I may need to be on call. I don’t sync my work e-mails on my phone, I can get them in the Outlook app when I want but I don’t have notifications turned on for that.

I’m an ex EA, worked for 4 different CEOs. It’s expectations of your boss, whether you’re hourly or salary, and honestly your life. I had one CEO that expected me to be available 24/7. Another one that would almost be upset if I answered an email after hours. For my mental health, I silenced all notifications on my phone except family and some friends after a certain time - like 6pm- to give my family priority. If my CEO called, it would ring but a text would be silenced. Play with the settings on your phone. I’d turn those off during busy times because I knew expectations were different then than during slower times.

like

I don’t check any email after 5pm or on weekends. It’s a situation where once you break the seal there’s no going back

like

I have work email on my phone, but no notifications. It only pulls in new messages on request. I usually prefer it because it helps me be flexible generally and structure my own balance. When I’m unbalanced I do check it too often, but that’s on me. I think we all work weird hours these days so I don’t feel obligated to respond after hours just because something comes my way (unless, as mentioned, it has been prediscussed)

People have my cell, and if there is an urgent after hours situation I’ll get a text to check email. If super urgent they will actually call. Nobody has abused that access.

like

I used to have two phones but I've gone to dual SIM because losing two phones in my handbag became annoying. I use DND hours and I also snooze the chatty apps outside BH. I think setting my own boundaries has helped the most. Everyone can email me but I can ignore them. If it's my own staff emailing me, i educate them on delayed delivery...

like

Yes you can dual Sim with some iPhones! One esim and one physical Sim. I have a pixel.

like

Thats hard for an EA, because I feel like your team might need you outside of hours sometimes. I'd suggest putting in your signature something "if this is a true emergency, please call/text me on xxx", and ensure that its not abused (I'm hoping you have direct line to leadership that you can voice this to if it became a problem). Otherwise you should be working your normal hours .

My job title doesn’t accurately match my duties, I’m more of admin/operations assistant so right now I’m able to have the separation. But I’m looking for a new job so I wanted to see if other people also had the ability to separate

like

I’m industry and outside of working hours my boss knows to text or call if it’s an emergency. Been working there 18 mos and have received 2 texts with requests to get back online.

like

I had my work email on my personal phone once, and never again. While I can turn off the notifications and all, I couldn't turn off my guilt about not checking in, so had to separate for peace of mind. Also, because I'd get work calls on a Saturday of people who were legitimately trying to just leave me a VM for Monday, not realizing my work phone was my personal phone. I also got calls up to 6 months post-leaving as a result. 😹

like

Nope, my last two companies gave me the option - they either pay for a work phone or they pay me a stipend for using mine. I think a lot of folks see it as "free" money, so end up getting themselves in a pickle when they can't disconnect.

Two phones. At the end of my day, I turn my work phone on silent, leave it on my desk and walk away. At the end of my day on Fridays, I turn my work phone off. I’m of the belief that everything can wait until tomorrow (at least in my HR world), and if it can’t, someone will figure it out. One person should not be a point of failure, and if you are, there’s a problem.

like

I have one number and all communications come to it. I answer emails/ Texts/ calls whenever I can and if I’m unable to for whatever reason I have a notification on.

Two phones - and I wouldn't go back. Evenings / weekends checking in then becomes my choice and not because I happened to see the notification because I am playing on my phone.

Hey gang, when applying for a job, what’s the etiquette for connecting directly with the person who you would be reporting to through LinkedIn? Would it be considered creepy/ unprofessional? And if not, what’s the best way to approach it?

For context
It’s a role that I’d be a good fit for, but it’s at a company that gets a lot of applicants so I’m looking for opportunities to get a leg up.

I have two mutuals with this person, but I barely know them so can’t really ask for an intro.

Hello all,
New to this role at my job, any guides, or help would greatly be appreciated.

If there is one, what’s the position below Google’s “Business Operations and Strategy Associate”? I’ve got 1.5 YOE in consulting, mainly tech implementation, and this position has a minimum requirement of 3 YOE. I’m looking to move to BizOps / Corp Strategy, but seems unlikely I’d secure this specific position.

Would my 12mo as BDR be good enough since I have 8 total years of professional experience?

Any suggestions on how to address the upper management teams' racial biases? Like, I don’t think anyone on the team is openly racist, or at least they aren’t aware of it but I have been with this company for about two months now and I can tell the difference in the way POC are treated vs. the white employees. For context, the leadership team is made up of 12 men (all white), and two white females. So, yeah, not sure how to address this.
