Korean in London here.
At times I have been the only Asian in the team or even the firm. I am fluent in Mandarin Chinese, Korean and Japanese so I do get shafted onto "Far East" matters.
Annoying especially when it's not really my practice area but what can I do right? That's my "value" to the firm I guess.
That’s why I claim to not speak the language, so they don’t pidgeonhole me
I initially was pre-med, but took political science/public policy/legal classes in undergrad and enjoyed that more. Decided to pursue a career in law as a result, thought I would end up in IP but ended up doing labor/employment law.
I have a nagging feeling I can’t kick that one of the reasons why I got my job was because I was Asian/minority. When I started, I was the only Asian in the office, and one of two BIPOC. I got a job with the government straight out of law school and I can’t help but feel like an imposter.
Thankfully I know a couple of Asian attorneys (from law school) and they have been super helpful to lean onto when I have my doubts.
Are you me??? I was also premed in undergrad but found criminology/sociology fascinating and ended up deciding to go pre-law my senior year of undergrad.
I also feel like I was hired because I’m a person of color. Our firm lacks diversity on the attorney level —I’m literally the only person of color, and I happen to be a double minority as I’m also a woman. There are only 4 women at the partner level and 7 women associates in a firm with just over 50 attorneys total.
