Idea: 3% conference, but 97% of the attendees must be men. I’m tired of talking about women’s empowerment to empowered women. Men need to hear the message, not us.

Am a man — totally comfortable with “the future is female.” Are you also one of those All Lives Matter people?

I think some of the rhetoric from some women makes men feel excluded or even threatened. Maybe working on more inclusivity might help. Even phrases like “The Future is Female” can leave guys wondering where that leaves them standing. Even if it isn’t meant to come off that way. Just my honest perspective

I’m tired of agencies thinking all they have to do is send a few delegates to the conference to show they’re for women in creative leadership roles when they have zero female ACDs or CDs

AD1 a large percentage of straight white men ive worked with could be described as mediocre at best. So they were definitely not hired and promoted based on talent and merit. Which means if agencies begin to hire based on talent and merit alone they will no longer be predominantly filled with straight white men. I do not currently see that happening. So yes we are, in the end, pushing for merit based hiring which would naturally mean teams would be more diverse because white straight men are not statistically the only humans capable of possessing talent.

I did manbassador (terrible name btw) training and have attended a bunch of talks /conferences. At several, they urged women to recruit men and I think that's the best idea. Here's how: They encouraged women to approach someone they see as a supporter--whether that person knowns it or not--share a time they felt that male stood up for or empowered them, and then invite them to the next talk, conference, etc. It's true that these events can come off as hostile territory as a straight white male. Mostly because you know eyes are on you for good or bad. Having someone explicitly invite you helps ease all that.

The industry seems unable to understand the sense of ‘diversity’. It means you’re open to hire and promote anyone, white, black, female, male, trans, without ears or face or arms, IF it’s better than the others. We cannot fill agency of mediocre people just to tick a box. If a white male is better, then you should hire him. It seems like it’s especially a problem in uk/us

“The future is female” is a dumb empowerment slogan I’m sorry. On its face that does not say that the future is fair, or merit based, or open minded, or has no unconscious bias. It sounds like “we’re going to replace a patriarchy with a matriarchy.” This kind of tone is why men would rather not participate. Just being honest

Problem: men don’t care to sit through Women Empowerment speeches. There’s gotta be a way to address the imbalance without building more walls and creating more division.

As a woman I find a notion of men trying to help me - sexist. Please stop. I'll help myself, thanks.

Unpopular opinion: hire and promote based on skill. No need for all of these circle jerks, the talent will rise to the top regardless of gender, color, sexual orientation, etc.

Maybe if men didn’t do the majority of the harassing and assaulting and discriminating they wouldn’t deserve to be bashed 🤣 Anyway, I think men are definitely a part of the solution! And the conference has definitely pushed that in their programming. Plus they have a “no man bashing” rule in their code of conduct that speakers follow. Cindy only pushed back on the men who have harassed. If you’re taking that personally...yikes

@Publicis The concept of “diversity” does not mean you’re “open to hire and promote anyone etc”, that just means you’re not being discriminatory, and is pretty much written in our laws at this point (in the US at least. We still have a way to go when it comes to Trans and Non-binary people). The problem is that if you look at agencies today, they are still overwhelmingly staffed with white cisgender men, especially in positions of power. There is nothing inherently illegal or wrong about that until you start paying closer attention to why that is and why this remains even though the demographic makeup of the US is much more diverse. The advertising industry isn’t bound to reflect those demographics but when you think about what we do (create campaigns through a multitude of visual representations of society, in a lot of ways shaping the way people, and children especially, process the world around them), then you start to understand why this is problematic.

I have too much to say about this. Senior managers at the holding companies don’t care. They want pretty young women to be their subordinates not their equals. Women don’t help themselves by hiring only women who look and dress like them (white and thin). The care even less about diversity. Worse still the pay in this industry sucks for everyone except be very top. Zero reason for talented minorities to enter. Compare 40k on mad ave versus 80k on Wall Street for first years. None of this is PC but it’s what I believe

@CD1 I personally think Cindy does a disservice to women by attacking all white men. It’s not the best approach to tear one group down in order to bring another group up. Better to find progressive partners. Reach across the aisle as they’d say in government

Spend some time actually getting in the know. Not your opinion based on what you've seen...really dig in. Begin to understand what drives situations like we have now. We all have unconscious biases. Know how to overcome yours? We all act based on how those before us have acted. Know how to overcome this? This is why you should attend 3%. This is why you should ask someone for their perspective and JUST listen. This is why we need movements like 3%. Without them, the power stays where it's always stayed. I was a cynic. Now I'm not, because I started listening and became a part of the solution.

Idea: Bring men into the fold for something truly just and admirable by making broad generalizations about them over the bad behavior of a few. In the past it’s really worked well for women and people of color. Why would I attend a RAT party to be abused all night? (Rosé and Avocado Toast) It was just yesterday self appointed Queen Cindy made another jab (LinkedIn) for absolutely no reason but to better her own personal firebrand. 90 percent of us wanted to get involved until we didn’t.
