EBD kids like to tear up a room , have a plan to clear the room in a hurry. Keep scissors and sharp objects locked up . Be prepared for books to come flying across the room at any time. Have at least two paras ready to document and clear the room. Have a walkie talkie to the office. Do not purposely push their buttons. These kids come from broken homes. Some were born on drugs.
Try to help them with stability. Show them you care. See if they need food to take home .
Give them breakfast. Try to find out their home life.
Lots of visuals needed. Be clear and precise. Avoid unnecessary words and instruction overload.
Have clear incentives and consequences in place. Vary the incentives as much as possible to avoid satiation. Menus of reward options are great for that. Pre-teach and reteach procedures, social skills, and expectations. Be as predictable and consistent as possible. Follow through on everything!
If you get any money for PD, I highly recommend the Boys Town specialized classroom management model. It’s what I run, and it’s a total game changer for kids with high behavior needs!

The training is expensive, so you’d need to get your admin on board. But it definitely helps you run a great EBD program.
We built out schedule having about 30-40 minutes of academic work, then a break/lunch/recess/choice time. I agree to keep your room simple, but do some decorating so that the kids feel like they are in a regular classroom. Also, take each kid individually and really analyze their behaviors- make sure to individualize. Remember that school has not been fun or successful for them, so find ways to make it that! Good luck!
Don’t decorate the room with too much. The fancier it looks the more likely it will get destroyed. Also use a class wide incentive system.
