CV1. That is 100% an issue. A couple thoughts. You should 100% raise the feedback that protected nights have not been protected. I would highly encourage full honesty and transparency in the sustainability survey.
I know generally at CV, there’s a tendency to over complicate deliverables or build more than is needed. I don’t know if that’s been your experience, but there are also things that can be done there to reduce the burden of a project.

There are 100% things that need to happen at an organizational level to improve things. I do believe there is a desire to get these to work. Your feedback on what is working and what’s not is important.

There may also be things that you can do on your end to take greater control of your sustainability (not to absolve CV of the things we need to do). I’m more than happy to have an offline discussion about what those things could be in your case.

At the end of the day, I’ve struggled with the same things you’ve struggled with. There are still times that I do wonder if the WLB is going to be where I need it to be. At the moment, for me, there’s enough reason for optimism to stick around, but that’s not a foregone conclusion.

Rest and recovery is the only tried and tested way to “cure” it. If you enjoy the work you do, it’s only a matter of some off screen time (weeks off). I’ve read it takes 10 days for your brain to even dial out of work before the brain reset even starts!

Be proactive and firm about communicating your needs to the firm.

Appraise what you need to feel healthy and motivated. For me, it’s unplugging for a couple hours between 6-8pm to work out, ride a bike, etc. Figure out what you need (relax and be entirely focused on something outside of work), how you can achieve it (take this time in afternoons as hands off) and communicate to your team what you are going to do (“Just as a heads up, I will be stepping away from my desk at this time every day and will be back at this time. If it’s an emergency, call my cell as I won’t have my laptop”).

It is within their interests to support your productivity, and I’ve found that if you give heads up, manage to make it consistent, and get your work done, then your team shouldn’t have an issue. If they do, get a second opinion within the firm or find a team that cares about your well-being.

Lastly, in my first couple years out of school, many of my big passions fell to the wayside. I didn’t go climbing or cook. I existed as a vessel to complete work only. If I could do it over, I would fight harder to maintain those passions so that I have goals and aspirations outside of work. I would consider what you filled time doing in college and how much you have lost it. Do you still have something you’re passionate about? Have you lost it?Should those passions come back? Should they be replaced with something new?

Time and rest and a definitely a big part of it. Recognizing weeks away can be a little challenging to achieve, a couple additional thoughts.

1) talk with Jeanette and share what types of projects you feel would be easier for you so you have a chance at several weeks without high acute burn
2) talk to your coach about things you struggle with during a project to identify tactics that might help to improve efficiency making things easier
3) work with your PL to have a protected night during the week (this is definitively one of the levers available to PLs)
4) block off time throughout the week to do something other than work (requires some planning, but if you work with your PL, this should be totally feasible)
5) if you’re feeling particularly burned out, it may also make sense to take a sick day to relax and maybe take care of life things that have fallen to the wayside

I recognize you’re frustrated and may take anything I say with a grain of salt, but I’m more than happy to discuss privately and confidentially provide any additional thoughts that might be helpful.

To be frank, no. I see it as a challenge in the industry and the client service nature of it. The fact that CV has worked to enable protected nights and some predictability I see as a commitment to sustainability. I have worked at other firms where managers have asked that someone cancel vacation to work on a project.

My opinion, but I think that’s what you’re asking for.

Personal: identify what you enjoy and care about vs. what has made burnout worse. Find a job that has more of those first two and less of what caused your burnout. Take a break between.

Company wide: hire another firm to tell you what you already know about issues with resourcing, respect, etc.

Second year at lit boutique. Being asked to draft a lot of briefs from scratch. Work product is great but I take way too long. Not necessarily procrastinating. I just struggle to get a flow state. I rewrite the same sentences over and over. Constantly restructure outline. Always stop to check westlaw. I want to just power through a first draft and add cites/revise prose later. But can’t figure out. Flow state only comes when I’m backed against a wall. Currently on medication. Any other tips?

Does anyone have advice on how to keep track of cases? I am 6 months in at a small med/insurance firm. When we are assigned cases by clients, it's my job to request and organize the medical records. We're starting to get dozens of COVID cases, in addition to regular litigation cases, and I am SO OVERWHELMED. I'm currently in a "paralysis-over analysis" stage and don't know how to get myself out of it. I feel like I'm drowning, help.
