I specifically ask for brokers not to show me no fee listings that they will charge you for.
Also if you get a list of properties you are planning to see that day, take a peak at Street easy and NYBits, they will usually list if the building is No Fee.
Also, if possible, don't sign anything from the brokers before you see places (some will ask you to sign after the fact). They are sleazy AF in NYC!
Decided to show me a Glenwood property, which is no fee and tried to charge me a fee. Told them to pound sand and rented with Glenwood directly.
I’ve had brokers put up listings and then try to take me to apt buildings to make commission. I told them I only want to see units they are the listing agent of. Absolutely baffles me that they were able to reverse the decision that banned charging fees to incoming tenants. They’re hired by owners. Owners should pay 100% of the time. Just like when you buy a place. Its such a frustrating racket.
Typically the fee structure is addressed at the building level, in other words, if the building is no fee, than it doesn’t matter who shows it. You can also just ask. Broker fees in this city are massive, so it is understandable if you ask.
