If a CD assigns more creatives to a project than there are budgeted billable hours, is that squarely on him/her or is Account also culpable?

Or did accounts promise more to the client than the budget would cover?

We don't know. A number of scenarios are possible. Overall, it's the PM who "assigns" tasks/work so maybe the CD went over them or straight up didn't tell anyone so they can do whatever they wanted to do. Many creatives fall into this trap that after the clients see the work they'll just love it and be over the moon and pay for it all and forgive us all distortions. I've seen more business lost instead due to unsanctioned overages.

You working extra hours doesn’t cost the client or the agency anything additional. Assume it’s not the only thing folks are working on

Depends how it went down. Did account/producers tell the CD they could assign that many? Or did the CD do it despite what they were told? Because I’ve seen that happen

From what I could tell, the CD assumed it was ok to bring on extra people and have all of them push their respective concepts for multiple rounds for the sake of getting better work. I assume because Account knew this was happening they would’ve thrown up a red flag much earlier than they did. It all feels very gray to me.

So the bigger issue is the amount of people put on the job. Got it.

Well, he probably should have. There are only a few scenarios that it should play out that was without being irresponsible. 1- at the beginning to solicit a lot of ideas/ break up like thinking or 2- when there isn’t any other work and he’s keeping people motivated and over delivering on the projects happening until new ones come in. If not it’s irresponsible because 1- leaves you all exposed to top brass. Guess who gets laid off when people aren’t funded, not the CD 2- it over promises to a client. A client expects that level of work every time and they ain’t paying for it. 3- it burns all your hours upfront and leaves the production screwed when it comes time to execute or the account team trying explain to the client how you burned all your hours already. It’s a business and you’d be best to learn/ understand the basics

Number 2 definitely came up (over-promising) 1 and 3 makes sense. I hadn’t really thought about how their actions could affect my employment. That’s pretty fcked if that’s the case. Thanks for the insight @SVP1 .

No problem. It sucks when staffing and hours get in the way of just wanting to deliver kick ass work. In an idea world the ebbs and flows allow for it, but it seems like more and more there are no ebbs, it’s every minute billed and every client squeezing the value of ideas and concepting to very limited number of hours

I can't stay stuck on here, but worried if I push it more aggressively then I'll catch hell. Thoughts? PM and PPMD are also both women cont.

I’m currently on the bench and had a senior colleague reach out to me about assisting with a work item. I volunteered to help (but I can’t charge my time). There was (to my knowledge) an entire team of individuals working on the project up until last week so it seemed to me that my help wasn’t really needed. The project is spinning down and they’ve lessened the team members, but I’m still helping out with tasks. I don’t mind helping at all, but it seems weird. Am I thinking into this too much?
